This Week: Halloween Spooktacular, Folk Concert, Invasive Plant Removal and More

Halloween Spooktacular at Community Center: Children ages 3-8 are invited to the Herndon Community Center this Friday for the annual Spooktacular, a not-too-scary event featuring ghoulish games, spooky crafts and a magic show. Children are encouraged to wear their bext costume, and each child will receive a special Halloween treat bag. Games and crafts will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the magic show starts at 7:30 p.m. Parents must accompany children. Cost: $8 in advance or $11 the day before and at the door. NoVA Suns Basketball Tryouts: 
Have a budding basketball star in your home? Or, a child who's interested in sports and needs a healthy indoor activity to keep them busy this winter? The NoVA Suns basketball team is holding tryouts for boys in the third through eighth grades this Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Coates Elementary School, 2480 River Birch Rd. in Oak Hill/Herndon. 'Runaway Home' Performs for Folk Club of Herndon-Reston: If Americana and folk music is one of your favorite genres, this week's concert by the Folk Club of Herndon-Reston should be right up your alley. The group is made up of three talented singer-songwriters—Mark Elliott (aka "The Troubador"), Gary Culley (aka "The Guitar Slinger") and Lisa McCarter (aka "The Mountain Songbird"). The trio is touring in support of their new self-titled album, which critics say features "heart-stopping three-part harmonies." Folk Club concerts take place at Amphora Diner Deluxe, 1151 Elden St. in Herndon. This Tuesday, Oct. 22, 7:15 p.m. $14 cover charge ($13 for Folk Club members).

HEN Invasive Plant Removal: Love to garden? Want to donate a few hours for the betterment of the Herndon community? Join the Herndon Environmental Network Habitat Heroes for an invasive plant removal, to help rid areas in town of harmful plants. Click the link above for more information and to RSVP. Meet in front of the Herndon Fortnightly Library, 768 Center St. at 10 a.m. 

Halloween Wagon Rides: Ages 8 and up, enjoy a one-hour narrated Halloween ride featuring family-friendly thrills, chills and adventures, followed by s'mores and hot apple cider. Dress appropriately and bring a flashlight. $8 each. Fall Harvest Cooking Class: Learn how to cook four different delicious fall dishes. Get to sample each dish, and toast to your culinary skill with a class of Sangria or sparkling apple cider. Assistance League of Northern Virginia Membership Meeting:
 Want to give back more in the local area? Assistance League of NoVA is holding a membership meeting and those interested in learning more about the group are welcome. It is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated
