This Week: Herndon Turkey Trot 5k, Design and Wine at ArtSpace, New 7-Eleven Opens and More

Herndon Turkey Trot 5k. A fun and healthy event for the whole family. Long-sleeved event shirts guaranteed for the first 750 pre-registered runners. Race begins at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave. Pre-registration available through this Friday at noon. Packet pick-up and race-day registration from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Prizes to the first- and second-place winners in the following age groups: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. A turkey and all the trimmings will be given to the overall male and female winners! Zinfandel and Zentangles. At ArtSpace Herndon's latest "Design and Wine" event, try your hand at this "purposeful doodling art form that’s a cross between meditation and graphic design," all while sampling delicious Zinfandel wines. Led by well-known local artist Keith Naquin. Cost: $30 for class and two glasses of wine. Ages 21 and older. Slurpees, Sandwiches and Coffee, Oh My! Plus, enter to win prizes like music by Dr. Dre, an iPod Shuffle or a $100 gift card when you come out to celebrate the grand opening of the brand-new 7-Eleven store in Herndon. The gang from All the Hits 107.3 FM will be leading the party. Enjoy free sandwich and cookie samples, 11-cent medium Slurpees and small coffees, and more. Parenting Strategies for Toddler Tantrums. At this month's meeting of the MOMS Club of Herndon (Moms Offering Moms Support), licensed social worker Karla Fife will discuss tactics for handling toddler tantrums and other basic strategies for dealing with the trials and tribulations of toddlerhood. The MOMS Club of Herndon welcomes local stay-at-home moms in the 20170 and 20171 zip codes to become members. Mention the Herndon High School Sports Boosters at the register when you check out, and a portion of your tab will benefit student athletes and sports programs at HHS. Live Music at Jimmy's. Come rock out with the fused country and rock of the Northern Virginia band KickStart at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern this Thursday night at 9 p.m. 697 Spring St., Herndon.
