Celebrate 'Hometown Holidays' in Herndon With These Events

From Chanukah On the Square to the Town Tree Lighting to New Year's Eve, check out what's happening during Herndon's Hometown Holidays season.

The Town of Herndon has pulled out all the stops to make 2013 a holiday season bursting at the seams with special celebratory events.

Below is a taste of all the special events coming up between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day in Herndon, with links to where you can find out more information. So get out your calendars, and get ready to ring in the season.

Chanukah On The Town Square. Bring family and friends for an evening of Chanukah fun. Giant Menorah lighting, crafts, refreshments and more. Sunday, Dec. 1, 5:30 p.m.


Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol. This one-man show retells the classic story but focuses on Scrooge’s departed, doomed and chained business partner, Jacob Marley. Tuesday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 29. NextStop Theatre Company. Industrial Strength Theater, 269 Sunset Park Drive, Herndon. Tickets starting at $20.

The 12 Dates of Christmas. A single woman navigates the holiday season. A new holiday classic for anyone who has ever struggled to find holiday cheer during ‘the most wonderful time of the year.” Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Sunday, Dec. 29. NextStop Theatre Company. Industrial Strength Theater, 269 Sunset Park Drive, Herndon. Tickets starting at $20. 

Lights, Camera, Christmas! Herndon Towne Square Singers' annual holiday concert. Music of the holidays from TV and movies. Saturday, Dec. 7, 7:30-9 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 8, 2-3:30 p.m. Tickets are $12. ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St. 703-787-7300. Tickets available online or at ArtSpace.

Holiday Homes Tour. A beloved annual tradition in Herndon. This year's tour is both walkable and bike-able! Five homes ranging from the 1800s to today are featured. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 the day of. Tickets available in person at Herndon Florist, 716 Lynn St.; ArtSpace, 750 Center St.; and Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave. Also available online.

Winter Open House/Santa's Workshop. Live entertainment including handbell music performed by Joyful Ringers, stories, visits with Santa, crafts sponsored by the Council for the Arts of Herndon, and refreshments courtesy of the Fortnightly Club and Friends of the Herndon Library. Check library website for specific activity times.  All ages. Saturday, Dec. 7, 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Herndon Fortnightly Library, 768 Center St.

Holiday Tree Lighting & Sing-Along. Carols, tree lighting and a visit from Santa. Corner of Lynn and Elden Streets, downtown Herndon. Saturday, Dec. 7, 5-6 p.m. Free. Sponsored by Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce

Herndon Holiday Arts & Crafts Show. More than 70 arts and craft vendors offer unique gifts, decorations and handmade items. Sunday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave. Free admission. 703-787-7300.

Holiday Model Train Show. See model trains, and the W&OD caboose and Herndon Depot Museum will also be open for tours. Saturday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St. 703-437-5556.

Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays. Get out those holiday decorations and dress up the house—and you could be a winner! Town staff members will be driving around the evening of Monday, Dec. 16, 6-8 p.m., to judge the dressiest, holiday-spirited homes for prizes. Several categories including light displays, whimsical, traditional and more. No need to register. 703-435-6800 ext. 2084.

A Storybook Holiday BrunchHoliday fun includes a visit with Santa, crafts, brunch, and a reading of a holiday story by a special guest. $14 per adult/child pair. Saturday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m. to noon. Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave.

New Year's Eve Golf Tournament. Annual four-person scramble. Entry fee includes green fee, cart fee, range balls, prizes and lunch. $70. Entry deadline Dec. 21. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. Herndon Centennial Golf Course, 909 Ferndale Ave. 

ArtSpace Herndon's New Year's Eve Celebration. 7 p.m.: Family-friendly art activities and music. 8 p.m.: Music by The Music Loft's "Jumbo Shrimp" youth band. 9 p.m.: Bonfire and drum circle. 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.: Jazz music by Al Robertson Quartet featuring Frank Lombardi, light refreshments, and a champagne toast at midnight. All ages. Free and open to the public. ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center St. 703-956-6590.
