TAKING HERNDON IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
When I ran for a Council seat in 2010, my objective was to give the benefit of my concept of public service and my professional background. During the campaign, I often stated that I would regularly visit homes and businesses to find out how they were affected by government programs and policies, and try to reduce their regulatory burden. I also promised that with my rather unique multidisciplinary background, I would bring new perspectives to the Council’s work.

After the 2010 election, many members of our community said that my winning represented a great change. In many ways, I have walked the walk, talked the talk and left no stone unturned. I have asked questions relentlessly and I have responded to almost every call for help from our citizens. When some councilmembers objected to my asking questions and/or visiting homes, many of you pleaded with me not to stop. I am glad that I did not.

The results speak for themselves. We made many legislative and administrative outcomes significantly better. And, although it took a while, many citizens became involved. They brought their energy, ideas and skills to the table and they started to ask tough questions. They have questioned the impacts of the Metro development on our quality of life and brought to light critical errors in the analysis. They have questioned the merits of a costly roundabout proposed for Dranesville Rd and through thoughtful research and analysis convinced the town to revise its plans. Our town is full of such bright and passionate people. We must continue to tap their ideas to protect and preserve our Town’s unique identity and to solve any problem that may come our way.
The past two years on the Council have demonstrated that I am willing and able to (1) provide the leadership to address many complex and diverse problems, (2) enable and nurture genuine participation by the affected citizens and (3) appoint those citizens who are ready to work hard and bring fresh perspectives to our committees, work groups, boards and commissions. As your Mayor, I can and will set the agenda to achieve our goals and make it possible to achieve our visions.
So, once again I ask you to place your faith and trust in me. But, this time, you know what my values are and what I am capable of. Please vote for me on May 1, 2012.
