The holiday season is ON in Herndon, if the results of the annual “Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays” decoration contest are any indication. Displays of festive creativity can be found throughout the town. Judges from the town’s Cultivating Community Initiative circulated throughout Herndon’s neighborhoods on Dec. 17, evaluating and then naming eight homes as contest winners. Santa's Workshop at Herndon Community Center
A number of local families headed out to the Herndon Community Center on Saturday for Santa's Workshop, part of the town's Herndon Hometown Holidays event series. HMC served as site for annual Holiday Model Train Show.
The annual Herndon Holiday Model Train Show filled the lobby of the Herndon Municipal Center with miniature landscapes circled by model trains on Saturday and Sunday. Children and children-at-heart enjoyed the display during the weekend, and were able to watch the trains, ask questions of their builders and learn about trains. Still time to enter Herndon's Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays and Patch's Deck the House contests.
This weekend's annual Holiday Model Train Show will take place both Saturday and Sunday for children of all ages as well as kids-at-heart to enjoy. The display will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St. Model trains will be set up throughout the upper floor of the HMC for viewing. Additionally, the red W&OD caboose adjacent to the building will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Herndon residents rang in the holidays with caroling and the annual tree lighting.
Herndon welcomed the holidays Saturday with a Christmas sing-along, tree lighting and a visit from Santa in downtown Herndon. Members of the Herndon High School Pride of Herndon band performed for the crowd to sing along before the countdown to the tree lighting. The evening concluded when Santa arrived atop a fire engine from the Fair Oaks station and spent time handing out candy and taking photos.

FRIDAY • Helping Others Home for the Holidays - JJ Deli is hosting a fundraiser for Fisher House that also offers attendees a chance to buy holiday gifts from local businesses, socialize with friends, get tips for the holidays and a chance at a grand prize raffle basket. • Free Basketball Clinic - This free basketball clinic at Herndon Middle School is for children in 5th through 8th grade. The Town of Herndon's Towne Square Singers are presenting a 30th anniversary winter concert, "Decembers Past," beginning Nov. 30. This year's holiday show will include many favorites from the Herndon Towne Square Singers' 30 years worth of holiday concerts. All shows will be held at the Elden Street Players' Industrial Strength Theatre, 269 Sunset Park Dr., in Herndon.
