Fox Mill Elementary students walked for Reston Interfaith in October.
Seven years ago, a first grade student at Fox Mill Elementary School wanted to do something about homelessness. For the last six years the school has held an annual Walk for the Homeless for Reston Interfaith, raising more than $38,000. The funds go to Reston Interfaith and and help Reston Interfaith receive additional funding from Fannie Mae. Reston Interfaith earned $102,741 from Fannie Mae through the program. The number of walkers who take part helps determine the amount of funding an organization receives from Fannie Mae, and every registration counts. HHS students helped raise more than $18,400 for Reston Interfaith.
Herndon High School students gathered on the track Thursday afternoon for a Help the Homeless Walk for Reston Interfaith. More than 925 students and staff participated, helping raise more than $18,400. See related articles: Help the Homeless Walk Raises More Than $18K
More than 900 students took part in the walk.
Thursday afternoon was a beautiful day for a Help the Homeless Walk for Reston Interfaith at Herndon High School. More than 925 students signed up for the walk. Some walked during their gym classes earlier this week, while many walked the track around the football field Thursday afternoon. Many Herndon High School clubs took part including the Key Club, Keyettes, Student Government Association, Arts Club, Step Team, cheerleading, field hockey, dance and football teams, band members, teachers, staff and many more. This is the third year HHS has held a Help the Homeless Walk. The first year 240 students participated and last year 360 students participated. Herndon and South Lakes high schools will raise money for Reston Interfaith.
The Herndon Hornets and South Lakes Seahawks announced on Friday that they would be raising money for Reston Interfaith through Help the Homeless Walk events this fall. Each school will see who can get the most participants at their Help the Homeless Walks this October as part of their homecoming celebrations. The announcement was made during the HHS vs SLHS football game by principals Kimberly Retzer and William Bates. Through November 4 a number of area schools and organizations will hold Help the Homeless Walks to benefit Reston Interfaith. Those in the Herndon and Reston communities are invited to particpate. Students at Hutchison Elementary's summer school program celebrated the Olympics this week.
During the last week of summer school at Hutchison Elementary School students celebrated the Olympics with games of their very own. On Wednesday, students played volleyball and other games, chose and researched their countries, created Olympics trading cards and pins and ended it all with a Help the Homeless Walk with Reston Interfaith. Ali Robbins, special events manager for Reston Interfaith, talked to the students about how they can help those who are homeless after the closing ceremonies. Because of a thunderstorm students did their Help the Homeless Walk inside the school.
