This Weekend: Take a Free Ride on the I-495 Express Lanes

A special promotion is in effect Saturday and Sunday to encourage travelers to try out the new express lanes.

Sick of the gridlock around the Beltway? Drivers this weekend can use the Interstate 495 Beltway Express Lanes for free — no E-ZPass required. The free weekend, April 6 and 7, is part of an educational campaign to encourage Beltway drivers to try the new travel option on the Virginia side of the Capital Beltway and see how the Express Lanes can work for them, according to the 495 Express Lanes project. In addition to two days of free travel, the Express Lanes will also lift the E-ZPass requirement. Drivers can travel on the Express Lanes with or without an E-ZPass and will not be charged a toll. VDOT Adds Last-Minute Improvements to Express Lanes

Measures to more clearly mark entrances for drivers were implemented overnight Monday.

In response to multiple accidents and driver confusion at the northbound entrance to the Express Lanes, the Virginia Department of Transportation implemented improved signage and lane markings overnight ahead of Tuesday morning's commute. Crews added dotted lines heading north from the Springfield Interchange about a mile south of the current entrance to the Express Lanes, making it more clear to drivers that the two left lanes will become Express Lanes. Solid lines that warn drivers heading north from the Springfield Interchange not to merge into the lanes were also extended 700 feet further south than they were originally. “We want to remind all drivers to remain alert and aware of the new traffic patterns on the Capital Beltway,” said …
