Volunteers and contributors were recognized at the annual Council for the Arts of Herndon meeting Wednesday.
Members of the Council for the Arts of Herndon gathered at Ice House Cafe in downtown Herndon on Wednesday to for the annual meeting and to honor volunteers and contributors to the organization. Council for the Arts Board President Grace Wolf discussed some of the programming the group does in the Town of Herndon, including many hands-on arts events for children, Herndon Festival, the annual Jimmy's Golf Tournament and providing scholarships and grants to area youth and arts organizations. In 2012 the organization provided more than $20,000 in scholarships and $8,000 in grants to other arts organizations, Wolf said. Wolf said there are some changes this year. The Council for the Arts of Herndon's annual meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Ice House Cafe in downtown Herndon. Members of Council for the Arts and local arts enthusiasts are welcome to gather for the annual meeting and awards ceremony. During the annual meeting, Council for the Arts will review the achievements of the previous year, thank its many volunteers and vote on the incoming board of directors. Awards to be given out include the Presidents Award, Project of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Business Sponsor of the Year. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available. Herdon group awards more than $10,000 in scholarships each year.
Council for the Arts of Herndon's Youth Art Scholarship applications are now available to students who plan to apply. Each year the Council for the Arts of Herndon awards more than $10,000 in scholarships to young artists. Area youths who are pursuing studies in the arts and live or go to school in Herndon are eligible. Additionally, applicants must have reached the age of 13 and may be no older than 21 on April 1, 2013. The applicant or a family member must be a member of the Council for the Arts of Herndon. Along with the application, the applicant must include two letters of recommendation. Key selection criteria include community and volunteer service, especially for arts related purposes, the merits of the program or curriculum …

Mural is the third downtown project commissioned by the Council for the Arts of Herndon.
The Council for the Arts of Herndon and artist Keith Naquin welcomed area residents to take a look at and hear more about his newest downtown mural, "Chesapeake Vistas," last week. The mural, on the side of Ice House Cafe, is the second one painted by Naquin in the CAH's downtown mural project, and the third in the project. Other murals include one depicting Herndon's historic roots on the wall of the Nachman building, and Naquin's "Virginia Vistas" on the rear of the Horn Motors building. During the Meet the Artist event on Jan. 9, Naquin explained how he created "Chesapeake Vistas" in thirds so it could be viewed from the inside of O'Sullivan's Irish Pub, next door to Ice House Cafe.
