On Monday: Avenue of the Flags on display, local American Legion Post and Town to hold ceremony at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
Monday is more than just a day off (for those of us that have it off) - it's a day to honor those who have fought for our country. In Herndon, the Town observes Memorial Day in a special way each year. This year, the celebration will take place Monday morning at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery. The Wayne M. Kidwell American Legion Post 184, in cooperation with the Town of Herndon, will be holding its annual Memorial Day Observance at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, 831 Dranesville Road, on Monday at 10 a.m. This year’s program will feature the Herndon Naval Junior ROTC Color Guard. There were 53 casket flags flown at Chestnut Grove for the Veterans Day Avenue of Flags.
The Avenue of Flags was flying from sunup to sundown on Sunday, as part of the American Legion Post 184's tribute to honor veterans. The American Legion Wayne M. Kidwell Post 184, along with volunteers from Herndon High School, assemble the Avenue of Flags each year as a tribute to veterans. This year there were 53 casket flags flown. The display is flown each Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Observance and Avenue of Flags will be held Sunday, Nov. 11.
The American Legion, Wayne M. Kidwell Post 184, and the Town of Herndon will hold the annual Veterans Day Observance at the Veterans Memorial on the Town Green on Sunday, Nov. 11. The Town Green is located behind the Herndon Municipal Center at 777 Lynn St. The observance will begin at 11 a.m. The Herndon community is invited to attend the event. This year's guest speaker is Lt. Col. Debra M. Biely, a retired US Marine. The Herndon High School Junior Naval ROTC will form the color guard and present the Colors for the ceremony. The Herndon Womens Club will serve coffee and donuts after the observance, inside the Herndon Municipal Center. The Herndon American Legion Wayne M. Kidwell Post 184 and the Town of Herndon will host a Memorial Day Observance at Chestnut Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28. The event will include the Avenue of Flags, and special remarks from Herndon Mayor Steve DeBenedittis. The Town of Herndon offices will be closed on Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day. Trash normally collected on Monday will instead be collected on Tuesday, May 29. The Herndon Community Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., though no classes will be held. The Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open from 6 a.m. until dark.

The Town of Herndon is looking for residents who would like to volunteer to be a part of the Chestnut Grove Cemetery Advisory Committee. The committee works to provide guidance on the cemetery's future develoment, general operations, and rules and regulations. The committee meets one to two times annually,or on an as-needed basis depending on cemetery activities. Volunteer members are appointed by Town Manager Art Anselene. Those interested in serving on the committee may contact the Town Clerk's office at 703-435-6804 or by email at town.clerk@herndon-va.gov.
