Local Cub Scouts to Remember Veterans During the Holidays

Cub Scout Pack 157 will lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery as part of Wreaths Across America.

• Contributed to Patch by Barry Dresdner On Saturday, Dec. 15 people from all across the nation will gather to honor veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day. Cub Scout Pack 157 of Herndon United Methodist Church has volunteered to assist in laying the wreaths again this year at Arlington National Cemetery after the Dec. 15 Remembrance Ceremony starting at noon. The pack has been laying wreaths on the graves of our fallen heroes for the past five years. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms. I have participated in this the last 3 years. It is an inspiring event to see the wreaths on the fields of stones; makes the young and old realize the cost of freedom. I recommend everyone go to the event.   more ›

Obama Pays Respects to War Dead at Arlington Cemetery

First family arrived at cemetery shortly before noon Saturday.

President Barack Obama and the first lady visited Alrington National Cemetery shortly before noon today to pay their respects to fallen U.S. soldiers, according to the Associated Press and media reports distributed by the White House. The couple visited Section 60, which is reserved for U.S. servicemen and women who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 6,200 military personnel have been killed in those wars, the AP reported. The Obamas breifly visited with family members who were at gravesites in Section 60. This is the president's third visit to that section, according to the White House.
