It may have taken until March, but Herndon finally saw the beginning of what is likely to be its first significant snowfall Wednesday morning. The Capital Weather Gang was forecasting 6 to 12 inches outside the Beltway, and 3 to 8 inches inside of it. Herndon is expected to get the 6 to 12 inches predicted. Temperatures will warm up into 40s by Wednesday.
The big chill in Northern Virginia continues through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s on Monday and Tuesday. Expect cloudy skies during the days and a possiblity for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday nights, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will feel much colder Monday. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue through Monday afternoon. As a result of the wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory until 3 p.m. Monday that includes the Potomac River. This means that wind speeds of 18 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions for small craft. A look at what's canceled, rescheduled Friday as winter weather advisory goes into effect.
Several school and government services and community activities are being canceled Friday in anticipation of afternoon snow. The Capital Weather Gang anticipates 1 to 2 inches of snow will fall between 2 and 5 p.m. Friday. A winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service is in place from 2 to 9 p.m. for Vienna and surrounding cities and counties. The service predicts "snow will begin during the mid-afternoon and taper off in the evening. Snow may be moderate to locally heavy at times during the late afternoon and early evening." Roads will become snow covered and slippery, the service says, "resulting in hazardous travel during the afternoon and evening commute." Flakes began falling in the late hours of Wednesday night leaving a layer of fresh snow for the Thursday morning commute and giving all Fairfax County Public Schools students a two-hour delay. FCPS announced the delay at about 5 a.m. this morning. The National Weather Service predicts about an inch of snow will have accumulated by the time it tapers off around 9 a.m. today. Original story, Jan. 16: The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather storm watch for the Fairfax County area which will be in effect Thursday morning until late Thursday night. Heavy snow is expected during this time, accumulating to an estimated five inches in some areas. Herndon is expected to see two to four inches of snow. An inch or two may accumulate before snow turns to rain Saturday.
Northern Virginia will see snow for the second time in less than a week Saturday morning as a storm system moves through the area. An inch or two of snow may accumulate Saturday, particularly north and west of DC. On Friday night, temperatures will drop to near freezing with precipitation starting after midnight to the north and west, but beginning closer to dawn south and east of DC. Temperatures Saturday will struggle to reach 40 degrees as snow turns to a wintry mix during the day. In some areas, the snow may turn to rain.
