Nearly 50 volunteers help pack food for area children in need.
Volunteers from Dominion Virginia Power joined the Assistance League of Northern Virginia to help pack food for children in need on Thursday. Schools that receive food through the program include Cora Kelly Elementary School in Alexandria, Lynbrook Elementary and Garfield Elementary schools in Springfield, and Yorkshire Elementary School in Manassas. About 80 percent of the children who receive free or reduced priced meals at the four schools receive weekend food packages. The children who receive the packages may otherwise go hungry on weekends. Assistance League and Dominion work together to help provide Weekend Food for Kids Program.
The Assistance League of Northern Virginia will be able to help feed more children in need thanks to a $20,000 grant from Dominion Virginia Power. The grant will support the Weekend Food for Kids Program, providing food to children who receive free or reduced price meals at four Title I schools in the area. This is the second year Dominion has provided such a grant to the Assistance League, which has helped the Weekend Food for Kids Program expand to more schools.
