Sick of traditional romance? These top five film lists, featuring horror, marriages and furry friends could be the perfect compliment to your Valentine's Day.
A VERY SCARY VALENTINE'S: So you're sitting at home crying in your wine, Johnny doesn't love you, you've no Valentine? Well, buck up. You think you've got unrequited love? At least you don't have webbed hands or being brought back from the dead being held against you. Monsters in the history of cinema have proven time and again they'd kill for love, and where does it get them? Chased by men with pitchforks, staked, or shot off a building. That's gratitude for you. King Kong (1933) - I'm starting with the ultimate example of Belle et La Bete-style unrequited love. There are three well known versions of this movie, and I'll always recommend the original from 1933. Poor baby was just misunderstood, and clearly appreciated a good silk frock…
Will he/she appreciate your gift this Valentine's Day?
Last week during a florist commercial, I informed my husband that I didn't want flowers as a gift for Valentine's Day. He gave me a surprised, that's-not-what-I-was-planning look, but the five vases under my kitchen sink indicate that I've got this guy figured out. In the same breath, I mentioned that since our bathroom scale is still recovering from the Super Bowl gluttonfest, we might want to forgo the heart-shaped box of chocolates as well. I realize that I just made things hard on my guy. He doesn't have free time on his hands to scheme up an amazing gift, so any little effort is appreciated. I just don't think my appreciation for a bouquet of roses and chocolates filled with pink goo is worth $50. That's not my love language. (Did I …

Nancy Loughin suggests a few local deals for Valentine's Day meals.
Valentine’s Day is a night where restaurants need to bring out their best in food, service, and the wow factor. When you are planning a special evening, it must be perfect. My first choice would be Piero’s Corner in Franklin Farms, as they have a “rising star” in Chef Gian Piero Mazzi. On Valentine’s Day they are serving a great appetizer—Crisp Mozzarella Croccante (think mozzarella-crunchy brittle, like almond brittle) and jumbo Lump Crab Brulee with capers and toasted bread for $12 (split this one, as you need to save room for the rest). Then split a salad (greens, grapes, walnuts and gorgonzola salad with their signature balsamic vinaigrette ($8). Then choose an entrée of the homemade Maine Lobster lasagna with red lipstick peppers (a …

There's something for everyone to celebrate Valentine's Day this weekend.
Valentine's Day is approaching and all of Herndon is celebrating. Local organizations, churches and businesses are celebrating by hosting Valentine's events for all. Find something to do with your sweetheart or the whole family. FRIDAY The Weekly Bluegrass Concert Series at Holy Cross Lutheran Church is hosting Dry Branch Fire Squad Friday night at 8 p.m. The group is known for its “down to the roots,” raw bluegrass sound. The show is $15 per person, with children 12 and under free. The Elden Street Players production of ROOMS: A Rock Romance has shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The musical centers on a duo of musicians who struggle to follow their careers while holding onto each other. Gottaswing’s Have a Heart Hop will benefit …
