Kaine takes oath of office Thursday afternoon at U.S. Capitol.
On the first day of the 113th Congress Thursday, Tim Kaine took the oath of office, officially taking the title of United States Senator. Kaine and his family participated in a re-enactment Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Capitol's Old Senate Chamber with Vice President Joe Biden officiating. Kaine's wife, Ann Holton, held a bible. The vice president swears in new Senators and re-elected Senators at the start of each Congress. The official swearing-in took place earlier on the Senate floor. Kaine, a Democrat, was elected Nov. 6 to the U.S. Senate representing Virginia, and will serve alongside Sen. Mark Warner (D). Both Kaine and Warner are former governors of Virginia. Dear editor, From his time as mayor of Richmond to governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine has proven he cares about results and he knows what matters to Virginians. We want good jobs, good schools, and we want to make sure our veterans and our seniors are given the benefits they have earned. Tim Kaine will make these issues a priority in the Senate and we can count on him to compromise with Republicans and Democrats to get this done. His opponent George Allen is a divisive figure who attacks Democrats – notably saying, “let’s enjoy knocking their soft teeth down their whining throats.” That’s not the type of leader we need right now. Last month, Patch asked our readers in Northern Virginia for a favor. We wanted to submit questionnaires to both U.S. Senate candidates in Virginia and we wanted our readers to come up with the questions. You all delivered. U.S. senate hopeful George Allen spoke to about 50 people Tuesday night at the Caroline Street library in downtown Fredericksburg. Energy policy, illegal immigration, reforming the tax code and the infamous "macaca incident" were all addressed.
