South Lakes Sports Roundup

Submitted to Patch by David Woodward and Karen Andrich. Have something you'd like to see published on Herndon Patch? E-mail Herndon@Patch.com. The South Lakes High School girls soccer team held top-ranked Stone Bridge to a 1-1 tie Tuesday. Steady defensive play by the back line of Gabby Alcantara, Lindsey Gibson, and Kaitlyn Gallagher frustrated and stifled the Bulldogs offense all night and All-District Goal Keeper Sara Vigen turned in one of the best performances of her high school career. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs went ahead 1-0 and took their one goal lead deep into the second half. With less than two minutes to play, after numerous chances on both ends, the Seahawks earned a PK and sophomore midfielder Elise Andrich…

Herndon Art Students Have 'Emerging Visions'

Exhibit at Greater Reston Ars Center features works from Herndon, Reston and Oakton-area schools.

Multimedia works with personal meaning from students artists at Herndon, South Lakes and Oakton High Schools is now on display at Greater Reston Arts Center. The exhibit is Emerging Visions, and it was inspired by an exhibit, Campaign Re/Form, that was held at GRACE last fall, says GRACE associate curator Erica Harrison. "The theme is 'voices," says Harrison. "About 15 students per school have developed ideas on themes they are passionate about. For some, that is  environmental and women's rights. Others looking more inward, with personal  experiences and challenges, such as social anxiety or body image." "All of the students have really put forth a tremendous amount of effort,"said Harrison. "There is definitely a wide variety of great …

Parents Talk School Crowding at FCPS Hearing

Fairfax County school board members will vote on five-year school building, renovation plan later this month.

Parents and students told the Fairfax County School Board on Monday night it worried the 2014-2018 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) wouldn't adequately address overcrowding in all places. Doing small boundary adjustments to overcrowded areas and then readjusting the plan's renovation queue, which calculates the order in which major school repairs will occur, might be a better, more efficient long-term strategy, they said. The five-year CIP budget will total $871.2 million or roughly $174.2 million per year. Funds approved in the 2011 School Bond Referendum and previous referenda will address approximately $190.8 million of the five-year requirement, leaving a balance of $680.3 million unfunded. Officials expect another school bond referendum…

FCPS: SLHS Headed Toward Severe Overcrowding

Capital Improvement Plan features expansion of high school and possible new high school in western part of Fairfax County.

In the last five years, South Lakes High School has gone from one of Fairfax County Public School's smallest high schools to bursting at its renovated seams. The growth, which puts South Lakes at 109-percent capacity utilization for 2012-13, is projected to put capacity at 140 percent by 2017-18, according to the FCPS Capital Improvement Plan, released last week. The latter number would make South Lakes the most overcrowded school in the county. Capacity utilization refers to the percentage of capacity that is being utilized by a building based on the building’s program capacity and the number of enrolled students. A school is considered overcrowded when the enrollment of the school is higher than its capacity. The issue has vaulted SLHS …

Rational arguments that South Lakes would be over-crowded (using Staff's own numbers) if the Tisdadt/Stu Gibson/South Lakes PTSA redistricting went forward as planned didn't could overcome the pro-redistricters worldview that anyone opposed to the redistricting was just a racist. Turns out we who opposed the redistricting could count; but, I don't expect to get any apologies.   more ›

Football: Stone Bridge Rolls Over South Lakes

Bulldogs quarterback Ryan Burns hurt during 49-6 victory.

Third-ranked Stone Bridge had no trouble with South Lakes on Friday as the Bulldogs easily dominated 49-6 in the Seahawks' home opener. The Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 Liberty) established their dominance early on, when junior D'Ante Yarborough scored three touchdowns in the first period, including two on touchdown passes from Ryan Burns. Early in the second period, Burns - the 6-foot-5 quarterback who has committed to Stanford - turned his ankle and did not play the rest of the game. He watched from the sidelines on crutches. It is not yet known whether he will be healthy in time for next week's game against Broad Run. After being down 28-0, South Lakes (1-2, 0-1 Liberty) got on the board in the second quarter, when Rashaan Jones fired a 78-yard …

Users Talk Tolls at Reston MWAA Meeting

Airports Authority collecting public opinion, but will it be enough to control rising Dulles Toll Road rates?

Citizens came to South Lakes High School in Reston Wednesday night to talk about tolls and there were plenty of people there from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) there to listen. Wednesday night's event was the second of three public meetings organized by the group that oversees the Dulles Toll Road and the construction of the Metrorail's Silver Line. But will public opinion be enough to slow the rise in toll road rates?   Under the toll rate proposal, the combined main plaza and ramp tolls, currently $2.25 for 2-axle vehicles, would increase to $2.75 in 2013, $3.50 in 2014 and $4.50 in 2015 in order to help fund the construction of the Silver Line Phase 2. Advocacy group Reston2020 predicts tolls for area motorists …

No Toll Increase

9:42 am on Thursday, November 15, 2012

MWAA is a total embarrassment. One USDOT IG investigation complete, another (Dulles Rail-specific) in progress, and an FBI investigation in-progress too... Yet they continue to raise tolls on commuters for a project few of us will use. Virginia must take or toll road back from MWAA and put an end to this corruption and abuse. Sign the petition at www.noTOLLincrease.org. There are better ways to …   more ›

With 7:46 left in the fourth quarter, South Lakes scored a third touchdown, taking the game to 21-0, but Herndon wouldn’t let the Seahawks walk away with a shut out. My apologies. We have another game story on the site as well that was contributed by Reston Patch, but most of my experience is in government, business and community reporting. I admit, I'm not a sports reporter and this is the first time I attended a football game as a reporter in my career and my knowledge is fairly limited. I had a choice to go to the game and try to cover it or not do …   more ›
