Fairfax County Police seeking suspect in Tuesday assault and abduction incident on Reston/Herndon border.
Fairfax County Police are looking for clues in an alleged abduction and assault Tuesday on the W & OD Trail on the Reston/Herndon border. A 31-year-old woman told police she was attacked around 7 p.m. while walking along the W & OD Trail. The woman entered the trail off of Reston Avenue and was near the overpass for Herndon Parkway when she noticed a man following her. Near Sunset Hills Road and the YMCA, the woman was dragged off of the path into a wooded area, police public information officer Don Gotthardt said. The victim struggled with her attacker, who eventually fled north onto a gravel horse trail. The victim did not require medical attention, police said. Bharat Patel opened the Hunters Woods store on Wednesday. On Saturday, he was found dead a block away.
The victim in a suspicious death in Reston on Saturday was an owner/franchisee of the Dunkin' Donuts franchise that opened just days ago at Hunters Woods Village Center. Bharat Patel, 40, along with co-owners Jay and Sri Vederey, opened the franchise at 2280 Hunters Woods Plaza Wednesday morning. By just after midnight on Saturday, Patel was dead. “All of us at Dunkin’ Donuts are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of Bharat Patel, a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee in Reston," a company spokesperson told WJLA TV. A Herndon man who was employed as a Fairfax County Public Schools bus driver was convicted of eight counts of possession of child pornography in Fairfax County Circuit Court on Wednesday. The jury recommended Derrick Nathan Smith serve 180 days in jail. Smith was not accused of committing any crimes against students or on at work when he was arrested by Herndon Police on Sept. 14, 2010. Smith drove routes for several Reston schools, including South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School, Lake Anne Elementary School and Hunters Woods Elementary School.
