Two New Photography Exhibits Open Wednesday at ArtSpace Herndon

'US 17: The Scenic Highway' and 'Hopeful Calm & Beginnings' are on display at ArtSpace through Feb. 24.

ArtSpace Herndon's newest exhibits capture the landscape and character of highway US 17 from Virginia to Florida, as well as the discovery of nature. The two exhibits open Wednesday.  U.S. 17: The Scenic Highway features the photography of Catherine Powers. Powers has traveled the highway from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Winchester to the Gulf of Mexico in Punta Gorda, FL.  "My photography captures the character of the people, the culture and the beauty of the land along this 1,100 mile byway — the marsh-lined rivers, pristine white beaches, quaint fishing villages, small farms, proud military heritage, large cities, and historic communities," Powers said in an ArtSpace press release.  Michael Austin Kane's exhibit, "Hopeful Calm & …

Local Photographer Earns Honor

Jim Kirby's aerial shot of Lake Audubon a grand prize winner in U.S. Forest Service contest.

Reston's Jim Kirby won the grand prize in the US Forest Service's "My Neighborhood Forest" contest. Kirby often took photos for the Town of Herndon publications, including it's At Home in Herndon Town Calendar, for a number of years.  He earned the US Forest Service honor for his photo of an aerial view of Lake Audubon taken in 2008. The contest had 100 entries and 15 winners, the forest service says. Kirby said he felt the image of Reston, showing what he called the "amazing forest that we live under," was just what the US Forest Service was looking for. The contest challenged photographers to take a neighborhood photo that showed urban or community forests. "The real winner here is Reston, which truly is an urban forest," Kirby says. …

ArtSpace Herndon Announces 2012 Fine Art Photography Winners

Woodbridge's Sharon Eisenzopf takes first place in 2012 Fine Art Photography Competition at ArtSpace Herndon.

ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts announced the winners of the 2012 Fine Art Photography Competition this week. The first place prize of $300 was awarded to Sharon Eisenzopf of Woodbridge for her photo, Passing Through.  The juror of the exhibit, Mary Louise Ravese said the image brought together all the elements of a fine art black and white photograph, including line and composition, texture and tonal range.  “The circular passageway is interesting and presented off-center," she said in a press release. "The texture on the front wall draws you in and the lines of wet pavers contrast with the direction of the traffic flow through the passageway. The man with the umbrella is captured at just the right point…
