Academy Award nomination successes and snubs.
The 85th Academy Awards… These Oscar noms are full of the biggest surprises and snubs in a while, although there are still going to be some complete shoe-ins. Let's get to it! Will Affleck forever pay for Gigli? Argo and Zero Dark Thirty are both movies that have been highly lauded, with multiple nominations. That doesn't happen in a vacuum. What sense does it make for the directors not to get nominated as well? I speak of Ben Affleck of Argo and Kathryn Bigelow of Zero Dark Thirty, the latter of whom's exclusion is truly shocking. Some theaters in the D.C. area are devoting multiple screens to “The Hunger Games” when it opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday, and some of those showings are already sold out. Nationwide, advance ticket sales for the movie have broken records. Online movie ticket sales company Fandango reported Tuesday that more than 2,000 showings nationwide are sold out. Pre-sales are bigger than that of the first “Twilight” film. The official movie trailer on YouTube has gotten more than 8.3 million views (see it at right). Movie studio executives are predicting the movie could rake in upwards of $85 million in its first weekend, The Huffington Post reported. Here in Northern Virginia as of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday: The movie, based on books by Suzanne Collins, is …
