Weekend Planner: Holiday Events, HHS' Brigadoon & More

Holiday events are everywhere in Herndon.

FRIDAY • Helping Others Home for the Holidays - JJ Deli is hosting a fundraiser for Fisher House that also offers attendees a chance to buy holiday gifts from local businesses, socialize with friends, get tips for the holidays and a chance at a grand prize raffle basket.  • Free Basketball Clinic - This free basketball clinic at Herndon Middle School is for children in 5th through 8th grade. Players should bring a good indoor basketball and have appropriate basketball shoes.  • Herndon High School Presents Brigadoon - Herndon Drama brings the Lerner and Loewe musical Brigadoon to the stage. Nominate Your Neighbors for 'Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays'

Deck your halls with themes like classical, whimsical, creative and more.

Town of Herndon residents are busy decking the halls, hanging wreaths, stringing lights and decorating their homes for the holidays.  They're also invited to nominate their own or their neighbors' homes for the annual Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays neighborhood decoration contest. The contest is sponsored by the town's Cultivating Community Initiative.  The contest is open to all residents in the Town of Herndon limits. Nominations should be submtted to information@herndon-va.gov or to 703-435-6800 extention 2084 by Friday, Dec. 14.  The judging panel for the contest includes volunteer members of the Cultivating Community Committee. They will travel throughout the town on the evening of Monday, Dec. 17 to determine contest winners. …

Holiday Homes Tour of Herndon Tickets On Sale

This year's tour features three historic homes and two new homes.

One of Herndon's holiday traditions is nearly here. The annual Holiday Homes Tour takes place Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Five houses are included in this year's tour, including a Sears home ordered from the Sears catalog in the early 1900s that arrived piece by piece on a train. Also included is a newly renovated bungalow with a hand-dug basement with an artist's studio, a vine-covered brick cottage, a two-story clapboard farmhouse style home, and a newly built stone home.  The tour's organizers from the Cultivating Community Initiative say the Holiday Homes Tour is a great way to get in the spirit and gather ideas for holiday decorating and celebrating.  Tickets for the Holiday Homes Tour are currently on sale at Herndon …

Herndon Towne Square Singers to Present 'Decembers Past' Show

Tickets are on sale now for performances on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2.

The Town of Herndon's Towne Square Singers are presenting a 30th anniversary winter concert, "Decembers Past," beginning Nov. 30.  This year's holiday show will include many favorites from the Herndon Towne Square Singers' 30 years worth of holiday concerts.  All shows will be held at the Elden Street Players' Industrial Strength Theatre, 269 Sunset Park Dr., in Herndon.  Performances will take place:  • Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. • Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. • Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.  Tickets for the shows are $12 each and are available at the Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave., or by calling 703-787-7300 through 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. Home for the Holidays Event to Support Fisher House, Military Families

Event will feature local vendors and holiday gifts while benefiting military families.

The second annual Helping Others Home for the Holidays event at JJ Deli will include many area vendors and business for some local holiday shopping while supporting a good cause on Friday, Nov. 30. Home for the Holidays will support Fisher House, a group that helps provide military families a home away from home when they’re visiting with their soldiers who are receiving treatment at military medical centers. The event, which takes place from 4-9 p.m., will feature items such as Stella and Dot jewelry, local art, Scentsy, home decor, local wines for tasting and for sale, and much more.  New Herndon vendors this year include Canine Carousel and Herndon Florist. Herndon Celebrates with Hometown Holidays

Holiday events will take place in November and December.

Herndon's Hometown Holidays will celebrate the joy of the winter holidays this month and next month with a variety of events. Here are this year's Hometown Holidays events:  • Towne Square Singers' Holiday Concert - "Decembers Past"  The Towne Square Singers will perform favorite musical numbers from their holidays shows of the past 30 years. Santa's Workshop Comes to Herndon

Crafts, games, pizza and a visit from the Big Guy in the red suit

At least for a little while on Saturday, Santa's Workshop was based at the Herndon Community Center. Children of all ages, decked out in their holiday best, gathered at the Herndon Community Center. One thing was on every little person's mind: "Where's Santa?" The children kept busy with games and won prizes and worked on holiday craft projects. Temporary tattoos were popular, as were holiday necklaces. Moms and dads chatted while their children colored. But one question kept coming up. "Where's Santa?" Some bigger kids tried out Santa's chair, much to the dismay of some of the smaller children. The pizza arrived and families started to eat.  And then Santa walked through the door, to a gasp and then a cheer, and then a rush of children. …
