Herndon Coach Brian Day said this week the team worked on getting back to fundamentals, including alignment and assignment on defense and following their blocking rules and steps on offense. This week: After last week's game against the South Lakes Seahawks, the Hornets spent Saturday morning watching the highlights. The team ran and lifted weights, the coaches met on Sunday and practices continued on Monday. Head Coach Brian Day said he tells his team that every game is the biggest game of the year. South Lakes High School won the annual Baron Cameron Bowl, 21-7; the schools will have a friendly competition for Reston Interfaith's Help the Homeless walk.
Herndon High School’s JL Griffiths Stadium was packed Friday night as South Lakes came to visit for the annual Baron Cameron Bowl. It was Herndon’s first home game of the season. South Lakes took the lead in the second quarter with a little over three minutes left. The score was 7-0 going into halftime. With 1:49 left in the third period, an 8-yard run led to another touchdown for the Seahawks. After an extra-point kick by South Lakes’ Jeremiah Norman, the score was 14-0 going into the fourth quarter. With 7:46 left in the fourth quarter, South Lakes scored a third touchdown, taking the game to 21-0, but Herndon wouldn’t let the Seahawks walk away with a shut out. The Herndon High School football team is back on the field preparing for the 2012 season.
Herndon High School's football players are busy making preparations for the upcoming season. The team begins with two preseason scrimmages, one against Madison High School at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16, and another against T.C. Williams High School at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23. Both are home games. The regular season starts with an away game at Langley High School at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 30, and the first home game will be against South Lakes High School at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 7. Day’s experience with Westfield and Centreville brings new energy to Hornet football.
Brian Day is now Herndon High School’s head football coach, and he is gung-ho about becoming part of the Hornet family. “This will be my first opportunity to take charge of a program from A to Z," said Day. "And I’ll be honest, I m extremely excited about it." Day spent the 2011 season as Centreville quarterbacks’ coach grooming Mitch Ferrick, who led the Wildcats all the way to the Virginia state championship game in just his first year starting at quarterback. “Mitch was one of those kids who lived for playing high school football at his high school,” Day said.
