A number of Herndon-area community members will be honored at the annual Herndon-Reston FISH Fling Gala and Fundraiser on April 20. The annual gala will take place at the Crowne Plaza Dulles Hotel in Herndon, and will raise needed funding to help support those in need in the Reston and Herndon communities. A special recognition ceremony will be held at the gala for several volunteers who work to support Herndon-Reston FISH. They will be honored as Star Fish, and include: • Claire Dessart, a Bargain Loft volunteer since 2009. She works two to three regular shifts per week and helps often as a sub, even at the last minute. Reston's Giving Circle of HOPE announced it will give $55,000 to 11 area nonprofits in the upcoming year's grant cycle. Receiving the $5,000 grants: Alternative House, Computer C.O.R.E., Friends of Guest House, GRACE Ministries, Herndon-Reston FISH, Literacy Council of NoVa, Manassas Midwifery, NoVa Therapeutic Riding Program, OAR, Packaged with Care, and Stroke Comeback Center. This is the ninth grant cycle for the Giving Circle of HOPE, a Reston-based group of more than 100 members that was founded in 2004 to promote volunteerism and philanthropy. The 2012 FISH Fling Gala and Fundraiser, benefitting Herndon-Reston FISH, will take place this Saturday, May 19 at the Crowne Plaza Dulles Airport Hotel. The event will include music, dancing, games, prizes, auctions, dinner, dessert and more. Herndon-Reson FISH, which stands for Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help, is a nonprofit organization that has helped area residents during times of need since 1969. FISH operates a referral hotline, helping more than 100 callers each day to get the resources they need. The group has donated more than $427,000 in emergency assistance payments to help residents in need keep their heat, electricity or other necessities running. The Giving Circle of HOPE will honor three Herndon organizations this year with grants from its eighth annual grant program. Each year the Giving Circle of Hope awards 10 grants to organizations throughout Northern Virginia. Herndon-Reston FISH, Grace Ministries and the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic are among this year’s organizations to receive grants. Each of the nonprofit organizations will receive $5,000.
