Camps run March 25 through March 29.
The Herndon Community Center and Herndon Parks and Recreation department's spring break camp registration is now open. Camps will start on March 25 and run through March 29. Program offerings are listed in the Spring Herndon Programs and Events Guide. Camps include the Traveling Teens Camp for ages 12-17 that includes paint ball, the Spy Museum, laster tag, bowling, Clay Cafe and Rebounderz Trampoline Park. Children 6-11 can attend camps at the Community Center that incudes crafts, sports, games and indoor swimming. Other camp programs include basketball, multi sports, acro/gymnastics, Lego robotics and 3D game design. Limited spaces are available. Herndon Festival lauded for its volunteer force and growth.
The Town of Herndon's Herndon Festival received recognition as one of the country's "fantastic festivals" in a new Recreation Management magazine article on making community programs special. The focus of the article is on what it takes to create effective community programs that result in bringing the community together and creating rewarding connections and relationships. The Town of Herndon is highlighted for having well-trained and well-informed volunteers helping provide the manpower behind Herndon Festival. Herndon Parks and Rec Marketing Specialist Jacqui Matthews spoke with the magazine. Registration for classes and programs through the Herndon Community Center opens to Town of Herndon residents Wednesday.
Registration for the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department's winter classes and programs begins this week. Registration is open to all Town of Herndon residents beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Registration can be done online or in person. Registration for non-Town of Herndon residents will be open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 both online and in person. If those signing up for programs and classes haven't signed up for one in a while, they may need to sign up through Herndon Parks and Recreation's new Webtrac system, which can be found by clicking here. Grant is for projects to be implemented in fiscal year 2014.
The Town of Herndon is acepting proposals for an art grant of up to $5,000 through the Virginia Commission for the Arts Local Government Challenge Grant Program. The grant is for projects that will be implemented in fiscal year 2014. Nonprofit arts organizations incorporated in the Town of Herndon will need to meet the Virginia Commission for the Arts' general policy guidelines. The VCA's 2013-2014 Guidelines for Funding can be found online by clicking here. Applicants are to provide full documentation of the projected budget and program planning, as well as a detailed description of how the project is to be implemented. Signup deadline is Dec. 28.
The Herndon Adult Basketball League still has room for interested teams. Team deposit is $100 and the deadline for registration is Dec. 28. Games are played on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings at the Herndon Community Center. League play will start the week of Jan. 13 and the season will run through the end of March. There will be no games on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. League cost is $750 total, which includes the $100 deposit. The Town of Herndon Parks and Recreation Department recently began using a new system for program registration called WebTrac. Patrons wishing to register for classes, including existing customers, must create a new account with the department in the WebTrac system. Customers are being encouraged to set up accounts during the month of November to ensure they're ready for winter registration, which opens Dec. 5 for Town of Herndon residents and Dec. 11 for non-residents. To qualify for a resident discount, those who live in the Town of Herndon must provide proof of residency in person at the Herndon Community Center after they establish an account with WebTrac. The Town of Herndon's department of parks and recreation won two awards at a recent conference.
About 450 delegates from around Virginia gathered earlier this month for the 58th annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society, including representatives from Herndon. The Town of Herndon's Department of Parks and Recreation won two awards at the event, which was held at Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County. More than 100 applications were submitted for awards in 14 different categories. The Herndon Community Center's tennis court bubbles rises.
Workers at the Herndon Community Center began work to put up the bubble that makes the center's outdoor tennis courts usable through the winter months today. Three of the six courts will be covered while three will remain uncovered. Lessons are offered for various age groups and skill levels year round.

Tips for those who live, work and hang out in the Town of Herndon.
There's plenty happening in Herndon, even late in the summer, including upcoming festivals, programs and more. We've got a few tips and reminders on how you can get involved. 1) The Herndon Community Center continues it's annual closure for maintenance and repairs through Sept. 3. The center will open again on Sept. 4, after the Labor Day holiday. 2) Monday marks the town's annual Labor Day Festival, which will include wine and microbrew tasing, food and cooking demonstrations, as well as live music on the Town Green.
