Herndon Festival Praised in Recreation Management Magazine

Herndon Festival lauded for its volunteer force and growth.

The Town of Herndon's Herndon Festival received recognition as one of the country's "fantastic festivals" in a new Recreation Management magazine article on making community programs special. The focus of the article is on what it takes to create effective community programs that result in bringing the community together and creating rewarding connections and relationships.  The Town of Herndon is highlighted for having well-trained and well-informed volunteers helping provide the manpower behind Herndon Festival.  Herndon Parks and Rec Marketing Specialist Jacqui Matthews spoke with the magazine. Herndon Festival Voted No. 1 By Family Magazine Readers

Washington FAMILY Magazine readers choose Herndon Festival as best festival in the region.

Washington FAMILY Magazine’s annual Best for Families survey named Herndon Festival as the Best of the Best. The festival won in the category of Best Festival or Celebration for Families, Herndon’s Parks and Recreation Department announced Thursday. This is the second consecutive year that the Herndon Festival has been selected as the leading festival in the region for the category. More than 16,000 nominations in all the categories were submitted to FAMILY Magazine, making it a recording-setting year for nominees, a town press release said. Herndon Festival is produced by the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department, and celebrated its 32nd year in 2012. Remembering Herndon's History

Herndon History: 'This Town Needs a Good Party!'

Another Herndon Festival has recently come to an end. Do you know how and why the Herndon Festival first got started?

Flashback to 1980: Jimmy Carter was President, Tom Rust was Mayor of Herndon, and Herndon’s population was a little over 13,000. At that time, the Town had an annual arts and crafts show near the old Town Hall, but a man named Arno Randall wanted more. A Herndon resident, Randall had just been elected as an officer in the Herndon Jaycees, a civic organization that was very active in Town at that time. Trying to think of an activity that would bring local businesses, civic organizations, residents and shoppers together, he recalled a festival that he had once seen in his travels. This was something that he thought would work in Herndon. Randall went to see Herndon’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Art Anselene (now Herndon’s Town Manager…

I remember getting down to the old town hall green early in the morning to save a spot on the lawn with our big blanket. Saturday was a sunny, mild day for Herndon Festival with a high of about 74 degrees, bringing out large crowds. Vicky Dorman from the Council for the Arts of Herndon said the group's beer booth sold a record amount on Saturday. Attendees enjoyed roving performers, children's arts and crafts activities, entertainment on three stages and much more. Five Things to Know: Sunday at Herndon Festival

Today's the last day of Herndon Festival. Check out the carnival, NASCAR simulator or hang out on the HMC Stage lawn with some Americana-themed entertainment.

Sunday brings a high of 80 for the closing day of Herndon Festival, which continues on with entertainment, games, food and activities for all ages.  1. The Herndon Festival 10K/5K Run and Fitness Expo takes place at 7:30 a.m. today. The race starts and ends at the Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave., where it will culminate with a Fitness Expo from 7:30-9:30 a.m. in the HCC gym. The expo will include a number of health, wellness and fitness vendors with product samples and information.  2. The Business Expo is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, while the Arts and Crafts Show and food vendors are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Carnival is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Kid's Alley and Children's Hands-On Art area is open again…

Today should be a dry, mostly sunny day at Herndon Festival. Here's some highlights of the day.

Today’s high is 74 degrees and partially cloudy—great Herndon Festival weather. Here are a few tips on what’s happening today at the festival.  1. The Kid’s Alley and Children’s Hands-On Art Area will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lot at the intersection of Lynn and Station streets, offering arts and craft projects for children, as well as a number of roving street performers, including The Unicycle Lady, a stilt walker, spoon player and Jake the Magician. 2. Friday night was a damp evening at Herndon Festival.

The 32nd annual Herndon Festival got a little damp on Friday evening as severe thunderstorms and heavy rains moved through the area, triggering some flash flood warnings and tornado watches. Herndon Festival staffers, volunteers and carnival workers still came out to serve those who were willing to brave the rain. Thursday's high of 82 and sunny skies brought out many to the opening day at Herndon Festival.

The 32nd annual Herndon Festival kicked off Thursday evening with attendees that came to dine on festival fare, go on rides at the carnival, play carnival games and dance to live music. The warm evening brought out large crowds but Friday night may be a different story. Strong Storms Could Impact Herndon Festival

Severe thunderstorms beginning in the early afternoon and increasing from 7-9 p.m. today could keep people from Herndon Festival.

Update - 3:07 p.m. Friday: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch across Northern Virginia until 9 p.m.  Winds are starting to pick up and scattered rain is developing across Northern Virginia ahead of the cold front that will bring strong thunderstorms to the area during rush hour.
