Nearby residents may see unusual police activity in Bready Park during these times, but it is no cause for alarm, the department said.
The Herndon Police Department sent out a statement this week informing locals that it plans to conduct emergency drills at the Herndon Community Center and Bready Park over the next two Sundays - so if anyone sees police at the park, there's no reason to worry. The Town of Herndon Police Department will be closing the Community Center during certain evening hours on two Sunday evenings to conduct the emergency operations exercises. The two Sunday evenings will be during this week and next - April 28 and May 5. "Any police activity in Bready Park outside the community center, or unusual noise coming from the center, may be attributed to these drills," the police said in a statement. Distinguished Service awards were given out at the well-attended annual event Sunday - including the first award to go to a teen in 12 years.
The Herndon Community Center was packed with happy faces Sunday evening for the Mayor's Volunteer Appreciation Night. The annual event thanks locals who have volunteered at least 100 hours of their time in their communities - which says a lot, considering there were more than 400 honorees invited this year. The night's program thanked the 400+ volunteers by name, and each was given a wrapped gift from the Mayor and Town Council. Mayor Lisa Merkel also presented the 2013 Distinguished Service Awards during the night's festivities. This year, one corporate award and four individual awards were presented. Camps run March 25 through March 29.
The Herndon Community Center and Herndon Parks and Recreation department's spring break camp registration is now open. Camps will start on March 25 and run through March 29. Program offerings are listed in the Spring Herndon Programs and Events Guide. Camps include the Traveling Teens Camp for ages 12-17 that includes paint ball, the Spy Museum, laster tag, bowling, Clay Cafe and Rebounderz Trampoline Park. Children 6-11 can attend camps at the Community Center that incudes crafts, sports, games and indoor swimming. Other camp programs include basketball, multi sports, acro/gymnastics, Lego robotics and 3D game design. Limited spaces are available. Registration for classes and programs through the Herndon Community Center opens to Town of Herndon residents Wednesday.
Registration for the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department's winter classes and programs begins this week. Registration is open to all Town of Herndon residents beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Registration can be done online or in person. Registration for non-Town of Herndon residents will be open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 both online and in person. If those signing up for programs and classes haven't signed up for one in a while, they may need to sign up through Herndon Parks and Recreation's new Webtrac system, which can be found by clicking here. 1. The Herndon Community Center pool will be closed for maintenance beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday. The pool will reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday. The Herndon Adult Basketball League still has room for interested teams. Team deposit is $100 and the deadline for registration is Dec. 28. Games are played on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings at the Herndon Community Center. League play will start the week of Jan. 13 and the season will run through the end of March. There will be no games on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. League cost is $750 total, which includes the $100 deposit. Come and get 'em! The Herndon Holiday Homes Tour is today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tickets are still available. Five houses are included in this year's tour, including a Sears home ordered from the Sears catalog in the early 1900s that arrived piece by piece on a train. Day-of tickets for the Holiday Homes Tour are available at Herndon Florist, ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Community Center for $20. The tour ends just in time for the annual Herndon Holiday Tree Lighting and Sing-Along. The sing-along starts at 5 p.m. in downtown Herndon and will include carols, music performed by Herndon High School band students, a tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus. The Town of Herndon's government offices and services will be impacted by the Thanksgiving holiday. Town offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday. No refuse will be collected on Thursday.
