Free Tax Service at Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center Saturday

Congressman Gerry Connolly will participate at this weekend's free tax assistance service in Herndon.

Congressman Gerry Connolly will be speaking during a free tax assistance service to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center.  The event, held at 1086 Elden St., will provide free tax preparation and filing assistance for low and moderate income taxpayers. The HNRC is an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site.  There are more than 6,000 similar sites across the nation that are assisting taxpayers this year. Last year volunteers helped prepare more than 1.6 million returns.  In Fairfax County, 2012 volunteers helped file about 4,800 tax returns, helping provide about $8.5 million in refunds to local taxpayers. The Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center is operated by Fairfax County and managed by …

Congressman Gerry Connolly: Congress is 'Dysfunctional'

The March 1 deadline for sequestration passed, and another deadline could come and go March 27.

Northern Virginia Congressmen Gerry Connolly (D-11th) called Congress "dysfunctional," as the midnight deadline on sequestration steadily approached.  "It's a dysfunctional Congress," agreed Jim Moran (D-8th), who spoke with Patch at a ribbon-cutting Friday in Lorton. "I think it ill-serves the people of the United States today. It's very frustrating, very disappointing. It's an institution that is not serving its functions."  Connolly didn't expect a last-minute compromise on $1.2 trillion in debt reduction, and he was right. The U.S. military will be forced to cut $46 billion and domestic defense spending will be cut by $85 billion this year alone, he said. "It is the consequence of a dysfunctional Congress," he said. "It's the …

Thanks for telling us. Connolly and Moran exempt themselves from the "dysfunctional" stigma, presumably. Moran explains: "It's all a matter of a verbal accountability from the various interest groups for the cuts that are going to happen." Oh, I see. Short of shutting down the Defense Department, what little cuts to chip away at the wholly manageable $16 trillion public debt might Messrs Connolly…   more ›

Longer Airport Security Lines, Fewer Flights with Sequestration

Sequestration could affect every traveler at airports nationwide, say U.S. Reps. Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine speaking from Reagan National Airport Monday.

Federal sequestration could mean fewer flights and increased wait times at airports, Virginia lawmakers said Monday. In addition to flight delays caused by sequestration, it threatens to close small- to mid-sized airports across the country. The massive, indiscriminate spending cuts Congress put in motion to force a budget compromise would cut $600 million from the Federal Aviation Administration if they go into effect Friday. Jobs on the Line Under sequestration, the FAA would have to furlough employees for 11 days — with as much as 10 percent of its workforce furloughed on any given day — and the agency would be unable to hire replacements for the 30 percent of its workers eligible to retire. Up to 2,200 air traffic controllers would be …

Since the Washington Monument is already closed for earthquake related repairs, it looks like air travel has become the "Washington Monument" ploy when it comes to Sequestration. (As many readers might recall, in previous years when there was the possibility of a government shutdown over Congresses's inability to reach an accord on the budget, one of the publicized threats was "We'll have to …   more ›

US Reps. Gerry Connolly, Jim Moran Blast Post Office Decision to Suspend Saturday Service

Connolly writes letter to Postmaster General, asking for legal justification; cites study that says reducing mail volume will lead to revenue loss of $5.2 billion in first year.

Stopping the mail on Saturdays? Not so fast say two members of the Northern Virginia congressional delegation. Northern Virginia's U.S. Rep Gerald Connolly (D-11th) and U.S. Rep. James P. Moran (D-8th) expressed concern Wednesday afternoon about the U.S. Postal Service's announcement that it plans to suspend delivery of first-class mail service on Saturdays beginning in August. The USPS released a fact sheet Wednesday. “I have great concerns about eliminating Saturday mail delivery," Moran wrote in an email to Patch. "The Postal Service is grappling with major forces outside of its control: an economy increasingly relying on email and the Internet for communication, and a Congress that refuses to address the redundant pension pre-funding …

Moran: Northern Virginia 'Best Place' For FBI Headquarters

Site at Herndon's Center for Innovative Technology is among those being discussed.

Local, state and congressional leaders met Thursday in Arlington to discuss six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters and to present a unified front in their commitment to landing the new federal complex somewhere in Northern Virginia. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who called the meeting, said leaders from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties had a "singular focus" in bringing the FBI headquarters to the Old Dominion. "We're all committed to finding a home for the FBI in the commonwealth of Virginia," Moran said during a news conference following the meeting. "We are all going to promote Virginia as the best place for this relocation." Arlington's role was simply as host. It has not put forth any potential sites …

Connolly Urges $200 Million Gun Buyback Program

Forty House members sign letter backing proposed program added to any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal.

A letter co-written by Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th), and signed by 40 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, urges Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to support an immediate $200 million gun buyback program in any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal. Connolly, whose district includes the national headquarters for the NRA, and U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch of Florida authored the letter to the House leaders.  “Gun buybacks have proven successful in communities across the nation,” Connolly and Deutch said in a “Dear Colleague” to House members. “Adding $200 million to the final compromise on the fiscal cliff could remove as many as one million guns from our streets.”  Including the gun buyback program…

Their theory is that only a small fraction would actually surrender the weapons. Plenty of budget for that. The rest would be deemed criminals, and carefully targeted for criminal prosecution, and property forfeiture. Seize a few half-million-dollar houses (think 50-year-old brick ramblers in Fairfax County), collect a few hundred-thousand-dollar fines, and you're cooking with heavy grease.   more ›

Connolly to Host Telephone Town Hall Dec. 17

U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly will speak with 11th District residents.

Want to tell Rep. Gerry Connolly what is on your mind? Connolly will hold a telephone town hall for residents of Virginia’s 11th Congressional District residing in Fairfax and Prince William Counties and the City of Fairfax at 8 p.m. Dec. 17. Connolly (D) was elected to his second term in Congress on Nov. 6. Reston was recently redistricted to the 11th District from the 8th. Since Connolly started the telephone town halls shortly after he took office in January 2009, more than 190,000 district residents have participated in a call with the congressman, his office says. On one call in 2010, more than 30,000 people dialed in. Constituents will be called shortly before the meeting begins at 8 pm.  Connolly will give a brief rundown of the top…

Not Your Everyday Q&A With Joe Galdo

The Green Party candidate for Virginia's 11th congressional District is fed up with politics in Washington. How would he change things up?

(Editor's note: One of the greatest powers Americans have is their right to vote. Patch respects that, and wants our readership to be as informed as possible before walking into that voting booth on Tuesday. With that in mind, this is the fifth in a series of in-depth interviews with candidates vying for Virginia’s 11th congressional District seat.)  Playing hardball with China, reforming America's two-party political system and running as a third-party candidate were discussed this week in an interview with Joe Galdo, the Green Party candidate for Virginia's 11th congressional District seat. Galdo spoke with Patch from his home in Fairfax.    Galdo, 66, has less than $10,000 campaign cash on-hand, and faces incumbent Democrat Rep. Gerry …

Election 2012: Not Your Everyday Q&A with Gerry Connolly

Incumbent U.S. Rep. and Democrat faces several opponents in reelection bid for Virginia's 11th District seat.

(Editor's note: One of the greatest powers Americans have is their right to vote. Patch respects that, and wants our readership to be as informed as possible before walking into that voting booth on Nov. 6. With that in mind, this is the first in a series of in-depth interviews with candidates vying for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District seat.) Sequestration, foreign affairs and campaigning for reelection were among a few topics raised last week in an interview with U.S. Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th). Connolly spoke candidly in an interview with Patch at the Silver Diner in Reston.  Northern Virginia voters sent Connolly to Congress in 2008, after he won a special election against Republican Keith Fimian, who he again defeated in…

I think this article/interview was well done. It seems to skirt the abortion issue though. Connolly's ads I have been reading say women need to vote for him, because he is for abortion. Is that all he believes women care about? One of his ads says government needs to stay out of women's decisions...but I guess its ok for Obamacare to force the rest of us including his church (or former church, …   more ›
