Frying Pan Farm Park's Spring Meeting House Becomes State, National Landmark

A ceremony was held Sunday to dedicate the House's new historical marker.

  On Sunday, more than 100 visitors turned out for the dedication of a new historic marker at the Frying Pan Spring Meeting House in Herndon. Built in 1791, the Frying Pan Spring Meeting House served as a hospital during the Civil War and boasts connections to Patrick Henry, James Madison and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. After surviving 200 years of changing land use, the Civil War and major 20th-century suburban growth, the Meeting House recently achieved designation as a Virginia Landmark and National Register of Historic Places site. Miss the Farmers Market? Indoor Farmers Market Continues at Frying Pan Park

Each week a free activity or guest speaker will be on hand.

The indoor farmers market, Farmers Table, at Frying Pan Farm Park continues through April.  The market is open each Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and offers locally grown foods including fresh produce, baked goods, rubs, spices, eggs, honey, meats and more local products.  Additionally, each week includes a free activity or guest speaker. Here's what's being featured at the remaining Farmers Table events.  • March 28 - SPIRIT Open Equestrian will be providing free pony rides. Nu-Blu Takes Stage at Frying Pan Park This Sunday

Nu-Blu is performing as part of the park's Bluegrass Barn Series.

The Bluegrass Barn Series at Frying Pan Farm Park brings Nu-Blu to the farm at 7 p.m. this Sunday.  Nu-Blu provides a diverse listening experience, mixing original songs with traditional material. Nu-Blu also incorporates songs from other genres into its music and the group has a unique sound that keeps people coming back.  Husband and wife team Carolyn and Daniel Routh are the founders of Nu-Blu. Carolyn plays bass and sings lead vocals, while Daniel plays guitar, sings and writes songs. Levi Austin performs on banjo and vocals and Austin Koerner plays mandolin.  The Bluegrass Barn Series takes place in the visitors center at Frying Pan Farm Park, located at 2709 West Ox Rd. April Verch Band Comes to Frying Pan Park's Bluegrass Barn Series

Internationally renowned fiddler to perform at Frying Pan Farm Park.

The April Verch Band will takeover the barn at Frying Pan Farm Park this Sunday at 7 p.m. The band is known for music that makes people get up and dance. The band's style has been described as Canada's Ottawa Valley meets old-time Appalachia.  Tickets for this Bluegrass Barn Series concert are $15 at the door or $12 in advance.  Verch is internationally renowned for her fiddling, singing, songwriting as well as her step-dancing. Her shows are full of energy, charm and vibrant displays of music and dance.  The band's sets come from a variety of places including Canada and Appalachia. Farmers Table Comes Back to Frying Pan Farm Park

Indoor farmers market provides seasonal produce, activities and more.

Farmers Table is coming back to Frying Pan Farm Park for a second year starting in February.  The weekly event brings local farmers and vendors to the FPFP Visitors Center with seasonal produce, baked goods, meats, eggs and more. Farmers Table will be open from 2:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Feb. 21 through April 25.  In addition to fresh produce and other goods, Farmers Table will have activities for families and children. Activities may include cupcake making, warming fires, crafts, meeting the animals, and pony and wagon rides.   Local vendors and artists can apply to participate at Farmers Table until Jan. 27. For more information, call 703-437-9101. Flint Hollow Band to Perform at Bluegrass Barn Concert Series

Frying Pan Farm Park hosts Bluegrass series.

Herndon's Frying Pan Farm Park is welcoming Flint Hollow Band to the new Bluegrass Barn Concert Series on Sunday, Dec. 16.  The concert takes place at the visitor center auditorium at 7 p.m. The barn was formerly a dairy barn and church sanctuary.  Flint Hollow performs both classic bluegrass songs as well as original music. Listeners will hear the sounds of days gone by. They'll also hear a mix of traditional bluegrass and contemporary sounds.  Tickets for the concert are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Frying Pan Park's Tawny Hammond Named New Chief of Fairfax County Animal Shelter

The $17 million expanded shelter is set to open in December.

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter has a new chief, and will soon have a new home. Tawny Hammond, a longtime county employee and former manager of Herndon's Frying Pan Farm Park, officially started as the new director of the shelter last month, and the facility at 4500 West Ox Road will be expanding next door in December.   "This is a dream come true. I'm honored to be doing this," Hammond told Patch from her office. "How we treat animals is an indication of how we are as a society… We live and work for a day that no adoptable, healthy and rehabilitatable animal is ever euthanized." Frying Pan Farm Park to Celebrate Old Fashioned Christmas

Event includes warming bonfires, wagon rides, strolling carolers, storytelling and more.

Frying Pan Farm Park's annual Old-Fashioned Holiday Celebration will take over the park on Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The park will be filled with strolling carolers, holiday music, warming bonfires, storytelling, children's activities and more. Other activities include a craft table, taking a tour of the farm house, and blacksmith demonstrations. Attendees can also purchase s'mores kits to make their own toasted treats at the bonfires.  The event is also a chance to children to do some holiday shopping. Frying Pan Park to Hold Bluegrass Series

Frying Pan Farm Park Bluegrass series runs through April 2013.

Bluegrass lovers can gather at Frying Pan Farm Park on West Ox Road for a series of Bluegrass Barn performances.  The performances will be on the first and third Sunday of the month through April 2013, and began earlier this month. Shows are $12 per person in advance or $15 at the door and feature legendary artists.
