Five Things to Know This Week in Herndon

Herndon Community Center pool closed Thursday.

1. The Herndon Community Center pool will be closed for maintenance beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday. The pool will reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday. For more information, call the Herndon Community Center at 703-787-7300.  2. Herndon's annual Father Daughter Dance is from 6:30-9 p.m. this Saturday at the Herndon Community Center. The dance is for girls ages 4-12 and their father, grandfather, uncle or other male guardian. Give back on MLK Day, Tomfoolery opens this week, FroZenYo coming to Herndon.

1. Those looking for a way to give back to the community with their family can head to Volunteer Fairfax's Give Together: A Family Volunteer Day. Attendees will work on service projects with various nonprofits around the region. A Give Together event will be held at the Herndon Senior Center from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday. This week is the last of the Herndon Golf Course Summer Camps and the last week of our Readers' Choice poll!

Here's a few things to know about happening in Herndon this week:  1. The last of the Herndon Golf Course Summer Camps will be this week from Tuesday to Thursday. Children and teens can learn the basics of golf, the rules of the game, etiquette and more.  2. The Herndon Rotary Club's weekly meeting will be Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at Amphora Diner Deluxe. This week's speaker is Dr. Robert Verhalen, who will be discussing the aging crisis faced by the United States.  3. There's a lot happening in Herndon this week, including a few things you may want to know about or attend.  1. The Herndon Braves play tonight at Herndon High School at 7 p.m. They take on the Baltimore Redbirds. The Redbirds are currently standing at first in the league, while the Braves are in seventh.  2. The Herndon Chamber Committee meets at noon at ArtSpace Herndon on Tuesday. The featured speaker is Herndon's new Mayor, Lisa Merkel, who will discuss her plans and goals for her term. The Herndon Town Council will be discussing the town's Capital Improvement Program at its next public hearing on May 22.

1) The swearing in for the 2012-2014 Herndon Town Council will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 6 p.m. at the Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St. The new town council begins its duties on July 1, 2012. The swearing in ceremony is open to the public. The Herndon Town Council will be discussing the town's 2013 budget Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

1) The Herndon Town Council will meet for a public hearing Tuesday night. On the agenda is the town's 2013 budget. Herndon residents and businesses are welcome to comment on the budget. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Mary Ingram Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St.  2) Volunteers are needed for the SPIRIT Open Equestrian Therapeutic Riding Program at Frying Pan Farm Park. Herndon Rotary has two $3,000 scholarships available to students living in the Town of Herndon.

1. Herndon Rotary has two scholarships available for high school students living in the town of Herndon, whether they are home schooled, attend a private school or attend Herndon High School. Two students will be awarded $3,000. Application requirements can be found here. 2. Connections for Hope is celebrating two years of service to the Herndon area community. The center provides numerous wrap-around services for those in need, including financial management counseling, tax assistance, job seeking assistance, health services through the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic and more.
