Richard Bowers Jr. is currently fire chief of Montgomery County, Md.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Richard Bowers Jr. the county’s new fire chief Tuesday afternoon. Bowers will leave his current position as fire chief in Montgomery County, Md., which he has held since 2008. He has served in the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service for more than 35 years. Bowers take over for Ronald Mastin, who plans to retire from the Fairfax County Fire Department on May 7. Bowers’ appointment is effective April 29. Program is free and available to those 18 and older.
Fairfax County residents will be able to learn more about what the first responders at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department do in the organization's first academy offered to the public. The Citizens Fire and Rescue Academy is a free, nine-week program where participants will learn about what firefighters and paramedics do on a daily basis. Topics include fire supression, emergency medical services, training, recruitment, special operations and more. The class is limited to 25 participants. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 18 or until the class is filled. The academy begins March 28 and will meet for nine weeks from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays at a number of locations in and outside of the fire department. Sessions will each …

Fire at Paradise Biryani Pointe evacuates other nearby businesses.
A fire was reported at a Woodland Park Crossing restaurant at about 4 p.m. Wednesday. The fire at Paradise Biryani Pointe, 12976-B Highland Crossing Dr., was reported as a grease fire and was in the ventilation shaft of the restaurant. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units were dispatched to the scene of the fire, which caused other nearby businesses to evacuate for about 45 minutes. No other passengers were on the bus in Saturday night incident.
A driver was extricated from from a bus Saturday night after a severe accident in the 2200 block of Rock Hill Road near the Center for Innovative Technology. The driver was trapped in the vehicle after hitting a tree. A helicopter and medical director were called to the scene. Medics successfully extricated the driver from the bus and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. There were no other passengers on the bus. All fire stations will host open houses Oct. 13.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is getting the word out about Fire Prevention Week culminating with a county-wide fire station open house this week. Fire Prevention Week open houses will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, including at Herndon Fire Station 4, Frying Pan Fire Station 36, Fox Mill Fire Station 31 and North Point Fire Station 39. This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Have Two Ways Out!" Each fire station will have displays, information and activities that emphasize fire safety, including preventing fires and fire injuries in the home. Are you prepared for an emergency? Professional Organizer Jackie Johnson wants to help make sure Herndon area residents are ready in the case of an emergency — from power outages to hurricanes. Her notion of ensuring that people have what they need in an emergency began with Sept. 11, she said. Johnson was a teacher when Sept. 11 occurred, and after the incident, she went straight to JJ Deli, the restaurant she and her husband own at the Herndon Centennial Golf Course, she said. She asked herself how they could help others. After contacting the Arlington Red Cross, she and her husband worked assembly-line style to make boxed lunches for the volunteers at the Pentagon. “Food is comfort,” she said. “People always need food.” The event helped…

The Labor Day Weekend Fill the Boot Campaign benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Families, firefighters and other local supporters joined together Thursday to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the kick-off event of this year’s Fill the Boot Campaign. The kick-off, held at Fairfax County Fire Station 5, is part of the Labor Day weekend events organized by the Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics in conjunction with the Fairfax Fire & Rescue Department, the Fairfax County Department of Public Safety Communications, Greater Washington Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Subway Restaurants. When William Garrett was a kid growing up in Gum Springs, he used to hang around the firefighters he admired at Franconia's Station No. 5. "I would tell them I would be a firefighter one day, and they'd say no, no, go to college," recalled Garrett, now 44. "I took their advice, but I still became a firefighter." What's more, Garrett has not only fulfilled that dream, but this summer he became deputy fire chief at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. The Herndon Town Council unanimously approved an ordinance rezoning the Herndon Fire Station, located at 680 Spring St., on Tuesday night. Fairfax County has plans to rebuild the station, which is more than 60 years old. The .26-acre site will be rezoned from central commercial to planned development – downtown. Teresa Lepe, chief of the county’s building design branch, said the current station is one of the oldest in the county’s system, constructed in 1950. She said call volumes at the station have increased in the last 20 years and will continue to do so.
