County to Look at Election Day Efficiency

Chairman Sharon Bulova proposed the commission, which will address long lines and wait times.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Tuesday forming a commission that will try to improve long lines and reduce wait times on Election Day. In her request to the Board, Chairman Sharon Bulova said she wanted to address the county’s efficiency during elections, a desire she made public earlier this month. This year’s turnout in the county was 80.5 percent of registered voters, up from 78.7 percent in 2008. More than 529,000 people showed up to the polls, about 12,000 more than four years ago. But officials say the higher turnout resulted in long waits at some poll locations. While some voters waited no more than 30 minutes at peak hours, the last vote in the county was cast at 10:30 p.m. – a wait of more than three …

Just vote for the bonds. They are free money. It doesn't cost anybody anything. Even now there are people in Herndon telling us to issue bonds to "be bold" and build art centers and garages, and nature centers with this free bond money. I think it comes from a stash the government has somewhere, because the bond language never says where the money comes from, just to what noble purpose it is …   more ›

I wish to state for the record that the Republican table at the Community Center (picture 2) was not that messy all day. That photo was taken in the afternoon when a few stray items had built up on the table.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Allen vs. Kaine – Clear Contrast, Critical Turning Point

Making the choice in the Allen vs. Kaine senate race.

We highlight issues including environmental and climate science that others tend to ignore. The records and goals of Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen provide a clear choice. 1. ENERGY Allen: Opposes most “green energy” initiatives Supports offshore drilling, which would seriously threaten:  - Virginia’s robust coastal economy, tourism and natural resources. - the largest military seaport in the world—Norfolk and the entire Hampton Roads metro area - other federal security and scientific operations Kaine: First Va. Governor to establish a state energy plan. The plan calls for use of all Virginia energy sources -- coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear, hydropower, biodiesel, wind and solar; would reduce Virginia’s rate of growth in …

Letter to the Editor: Vote for Chris Perkins for a 'Better and Brighter Future'

Response to Connolly's comment that Perkins doesn't have "sweat equity" needed to hold office.

In Response to Gerry Connolly for his comment that veterans and career-first officers, including Colonel Perkins, do not have the "sweat equity" needed to hold federal office. Gerry Connolly, a lawyer who doesn't legislate because Nancy says read Obama Care after it is passed. Connolly also say Yes when Nancy and Harry want more Tax Revenues from the 53% who pay taxes, and Yes to Harry and Obama when the Far Left want devastating cuts to our national defense capabilities and increasing unemployment in private and public sectors.  Gerry Connolly's "sweat equity",is take money from tax payers and give it away in order to keep the very large size chairs he needs.   Gerry Connolly is hell-bent on cutting the military and economic capabilities …

Sorry, liberalism is not an option worth serious consideration. Because 'right-wing' is the antithesis to the disorder of liberalism, 'Right-wing' deserves support simply because it is its opposite.   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Watch for Democratic Signs Disappearing

Sixty two signs have gone missing.

Dear Editor, The surest sign of a loser is when he becomes desperate and loses his grip on reality. The Republican Party has essentially given up on Herndon finding that when voters understand the issues, Republicans can't be taken seriously. From voter suppression to employers threatening employees to pizza joint owners threatening customers, this is the story of today's Republican Party. Locally, over the years I'm sure you've noticed political signage at the Herndon public permitted places. It seems that this year you have to look quickly before all the Democratic signs mysteriously disappear. Of course, as entitled human beings, Republicans don't need to follow rules; not even the eighth commandment. Because, even a first grader knows …

Tim Kaine Answers Your Questions

U.S. Senate candidate responds to 10 questions posed by Patch readers in Northern Virginia.

A few weeks ago, we asked Patch readers in Northern Virginia to throw out some questions for George Allen and Tim Kaine, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. So you asked and the candidates answered. Read George Allen's responses here. Tim Kaine's answers, published below, are unedited. 1. There is considerable reporting in the popular media that Social Security and Medicare are in financial ruin and in need of a fix, but every time one person dares to speak-up and suggest constructive measures to save the system, the other candidate attacks that person for being insensitive to the needs of seniors and claims the proponent of modifications wants to dismantle the programs.  How would you address these issues knowing full well …
