Elden Street Players Earns 10 WATCH Nominations

ESP's production of "Flowers for Algernon" received six nominations.

Elden Street Players has been nominated for 10 Washington Area Theatre Community Honors awards. The nominations for the 13th annual WATCH awards were announced Sunday at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. They encompassed 126 productions by 33 local theater companies, including 43 musicals and 83 plays, which were adjudicated for the awards in 2012 season. Elden Street Players’ production of “Flowers for Algernon” received six nominations. The players were also nominated for WATCH awards for “Clean House,” “Glengary Glen Ross,” and “Rooms: A Rock Romance." Five Things to Know This Week in Herndon

Give back on MLK Day, Tomfoolery opens this week, FroZenYo coming to Herndon.

1. Those looking for a way to give back to the community with their family can head to Volunteer Fairfax's Give Together: A Family Volunteer Day. Attendees will work on service projects with various nonprofits around the region. A Give Together event will be held at the Herndon Senior Center from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday. Auditions for ESP’s The Seafarer Start Jan. 14

The dark comedy takes the stage from March 15 through April 6.

Elden Street Players will hold auditions for The Seafarer from Jan. 14-15. The play, by Conor McPherson, is produced by Janet Bordeaux (Rooms, Flowers for Algernon), and directed by Angie Anderson (The Weir, Shining City). No appointments are needed for auditions. Auditions will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 15 at Hutchison Elementary School in Herndon. Registration begins at 7 p.m. Callbacks will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 if necessary. Rehearsals will be held at the Herndon Town Shop from Jan. 21 through March 14. Tickets for Elden Street Players' 'Tom Foolery' on Sale This Week

Elden Street Players apologizes in advance for the satirical 'Tom Foolery.'

Tickets for the Elden Street Players' upcoming production of Tom Foolery go on sale this week.  The satirical musical revue by Tom Lehrer opens Jan. 25 at the Industrial Strength Theater. The show is directed by Adrianna Hardy and runs through Feb. 16.  The show is produced by Susan d. Garvey, with music directed by Tom Fuller and stars Matthew "Moose" Thompson, Matthew Scarborough, Matt Williams, Becca Harney, and Caroline Simpson. Herndon's Dave Sinclair Honored at Town Council

Dave Sinclair, longtime volunteer, honored by Herndon Council.

Friends, family, acquaintances and organizations who know and work with Dave Sinclair gathered at Tuesday's Herndon Town Council meeting as he was honored by the town for his volunteer work.  Sinclair, who is moving to Charleston, SC for his retirement, has been a longtime volunteer in the town. Many people in Herndon recognize Sinclair because of the beaded messages he strings on his beard, or from events such as Friday Night Live. He's often seen at Herndon events behind a camera for Herndon Community Television, and at Elden Street Players' Industrial Strength Theatre.  Sinclair has been the volunteer coordinator for Friday Night Live for many years and first began volunteering with FNL in 1996. Elden Street Players to Hold 'Robin Hood' Auditions

ESP's Theatre for Young Audiences will perform "Robin Hood" in February.

Elden Street Players Theatre for Young Audiences will hold auditions for "Robin Hood" on Nov. 26 and 27.  The play, written by Tim Kelly, directed by Sue Klein and produced by Richard Durkin with executive producer Mary Ann Hall, will open in February.  Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 26-27 at 7 p.m., with registration open from 7-8:30 p.m. Callbacks will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. if necessary. Auditions will take place at Hutchison Elementary School, 13209 Parcher Ave.  Rehearsals will take place at Hutchsion Elementary School from Dec. 2012 through Jan. 2013 on weekday evenings. Five Things To Know This Week

Nominate your own yard or a neighbor's yard for the Town of Herndon's Yard of the Month award this summer.

1) It's Yard of the Month season in Herndon and town residents can nominate their own or their neighbor's yards for the award. Yard of the Month recognizes residents whose yards contribute to the beautification of their neighborhood and the town. Winners receive gift certificates to Meadows Farms and are recognized at Herndon Town Council meetings. Nominations for the June Yard of the Month award are due by May 15. 'Frozen' Offers Thought-Provoking Drama

Demanding play brings out best in Elden Street Players

Frozen, the Tony-nominated play by Bryony Lavery, is a difficult play. Difficult to describe, difficult to watch – but not difficult to recommend. If Frozen was just a play about a horrific crime, it wouldn’t dramatic, it would be gory. If Frozen was a play about a horrific crime’s impact on the victims and the criminal, it would just be another episode of Law and Order But Frozen, as presented by the Elden Street Players, goes past the crime, the criminal and the victims.
