A tale of holiday spirit centered in Herndon.
The oddest man lived on the property next to my grandparent’s winter cabin in Herndon. He was an elderly German immigrant, and my father always knew him as Mr. Klaus. Mr. Klaus was somewhat of a recluse, and considered a loner amongst the many Herndon villagers. My grandfather built his cabin around 1910 as a retreat from the harsh New England winters. My father often spoke fondly of his childhood days, visiting Grandpa, trampling through the open fields of snow which surrounded my grandfather’s cabin, roaming through the cold and quiet woods, sometimes wandering his way down to Sugarland Run. My father said he spotted Mr. Klaus only a few times during his childhood. He seemed to be more taken with Mr. Klaus’s dog and constant companion…

It won’t fit under your Christmas tree, and you can’t use Amazon’s Same Day shipping service for it. No camping out on Black Friday could have helped you get this gift, and it’s not on the iTunes App Store. But over 100 million boys have received this gift already. 2012 is a tough time to raise boys into strong young men. We do our best to be good parents and provide them with a good home, good friends and good morals. We sign them up for all the sports we can and we go to all their games – some of us even coach. We see them enjoying their sports and we feel like that’s enough. But is it? Even if he’s one of the gifted ones who continues to play sports in high school, possibly college, possibly beyond, have we really prepared him to accept…

• By Mitch Batkin - Sport & Health Clubs’ Senior Vice President As the temperatures begin to drop and the snowfall piles, people tend to lose all motivation to eat healthy and keep their bodies moving. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the holiday season is in full swing, which means we are hearing more, “Pass the mashed potatoes,” than, “I had the best workout today.” As anyone can tell you, people tend to gain weight around the holiday season. There is nothing wrong with enjoying oneself while celebrating this special season with loved ones, but there are steps that can be taken to avoid winter weight gain. Twenty-fifth annual Santa's Ride benefits sick children in local hospitals.
Santa Claus rode through the streets of Fairfax County on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle Tuesday, followed by a motorcade of his helpers in law enforcement. This is the 25th year local law enforcement agencies have participated in Santa's Ride for Children. The officers collected presents and donations at police stations and other areas around the county which they dropped off to children at INOVA Fairfax Hospital Child Life Center and Georgetown Hospital Lombardi Cancer Center. The toys will also go to the Ronald McDonald House and Reston F.I.S.H. As a "thank you" to children in some FCPS schools who collect toys, the officers, many of whom were riding motorcycles, escorted Santa to each location on his list. The route included Crossfield…
