Herndon Student Publications Honored by VHSL

The Scribe and The Hornet both won awards.

Many of Fairfax County Public Schools' student publications recently earned top honors from the Virginia High School League's publications evaluation services, including Herndon High School.  In the magazine division, Herndon High School's Scribe won second place. Additionally, in the yearbook division Herndon High School's The Hornet also received second place recognition.  The publications evaluated were from the 2011-12 school year.

Herndon Parks and Recreation Wins Two Awards

The Town of Herndon's department of parks and recreation won two awards at a recent conference.

About 450 delegates from around Virginia gathered earlier this month for the 58th annual Conference of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society, including representatives from Herndon.  The Town of Herndon's Department of Parks and Recreation won two awards at the event, which was held at Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County. More than 100 applications were submitted for awards in 14 different categories.  Herndon Parks and Recreation won two awards in the 25,000 and less population category:  • The 2011 Herndon Festival Sponsorship Brochure was voted Best Promotional Effort-Traditional • The 2011 Herndon Festival Special Design T-shirt was voted Best Promotional Effort-Specialty.  The conference provides a forum for parks and recreation …

Herndon Optometrist Receives Distinguished Achievement Award

Thomas Finley received the award from the Virginia Optometric Association.

Thomas Finley, owner of Dr. Finley's Family Eyecare in downtown Herndon, has been recognized by the Virginia Optometric Association with the 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award.  Finley received the honor because of his commitment to service with local charitable organizations, mentoring young doctors, serving as a legislative key person and advancing the optometric profession while providing exceptional service to his patients, according to a press release.  Finley has been an optometrist in Herndon and an active member of VOA for 23 years. He received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Pensylvannia College of Optometry and served as an optometry officer in the US Air Force for eight years.  “I have always tried to give back to my local…

Herndon Police Honored for Excellence in the Community and Public Safety

Three Herndon officers were recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Fairfax Alcohol Safety Action Program.

Three officers from the Herndon Police Department were recognized earlier this month during the 21st annual Awards for Excellence in the Community and Public Safety. The awards were presented by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Fairfax Alcohol Safety Action Program. Police officers from 19 area police departments were recognized for their work to educate, prevent and enforce drunk driving laws. Officers recognized from the Town of Herndon include: • Corporal Justin Dyer – Dyer has been a member of the HPD for seven years and currently works night shifts.
