Thirty five area photographers will have work featured in the exhibit.
ArtSpace Herndon's annual 2013 Fine Art Photography competition will open April 23 and run through May 26. According to ArtSpace's press release, the exhibit features visually rich and unique images. The exhibit includes the work of 35 finalists. More than 200 entries from 76 photographers were submitted to the competition. The winners of the competition will be announced by juror Barry Schmetter during the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 27 from 7-9 p.m. First, second and third place winners will receive cash awards. The performance will include Irish music and more.
The Treble Clefs, directed by Jean Goldsby, will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at ArtSpace. The performance will include a variety of choral music, including Irish music, showtunes, contemporary music and more. The St. Patrick's Day Eve concert will benefit ArtSpace Herndon. Refreshments, including a cash bar with wines and non-green Irish beer, will be provided at the event. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the door or from ArtSpace online. Civil War exhibit includes work by acclaimed Lincoln portrait artist Wendy Allen.
ArtSpace Herndon's newest exhibit, Beyond the Blue and Grey: The Virginia Home Front, opened Wednesday featuring work that celebrates the American Civil War era. An artist reception for the exhibit will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday at ArtSpace. The exhibit spotlights things, places and people tied to the Civil War, ones that are often overlooked. Subjects include aspects of daily life from about 1830 to 1880. Many museums and exhibits on the subject focus on the war itself, but this exhibit focuses on what it meant to be a Virginian during the war. The Town of Herndon is seeking great photos taken throughout the town for its 2014 Herndon Calendar Photography Competition. Entries are now being accepted by both professional and amateur photographers 16 and older for the third annual competition. The subject of all entries must be located within the limits of the Town of Herndon, and special consideration will be given to entries that include seasonal or community events. Photos submitted to the competition will be judged by a select panel of jurors and finalists will be invited to exhibit their work at ArtSpace Herndon from July 9 through August 4. 'US 17: The Scenic Highway' and 'Hopeful Calm & Beginnings' are on display at ArtSpace through Feb. 24.
ArtSpace Herndon's newest exhibits capture the landscape and character of highway US 17 from Virginia to Florida, as well as the discovery of nature. The two exhibits open Wednesday. U.S. 17: The Scenic Highway features the photography of Catherine Powers. Powers has traveled the highway from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Winchester to the Gulf of Mexico in Punta Gorda, FL. ArtSpace Herndon's New Years Eve Celebrations included a bonfire and local performers.
ArtSpace Herndon's third annual New Years Eve Celebrations brought out crowds of all ages to celebrate the evening on Monday night. The evening began with family friendly performances from Sun Dance Performance Company, original storytelling by Melanie Stanley, local folk singer Bill Davis and more. Attendees then headed outdoors for a bonfire where special pine cones sent up colored flames to the sky. The Herndon-Reston Drum Circle led drumming while Sun Dance Performance Company led folk dances. After the bonfire everyone headed back into ArtSpace for more local performances in a tonight show format, complete with interviews with performers, commercials and a Top 10 list. Event to include family activities from 7-9 p.m., bonfire at 9 p.m. and party at 10 p.m.
ArtSpace Herndon will once again fill the air with festivities on Dec. 31 with the third annual New Years Eve Celebration, which will feature three special events. The evening kicks off at ArtSpace, 750 Center St., with family friendly activities from 7-9 p.m. Children can enjoy hands-on art projects in the gallery, storytelling and folk music and dancing. Sun Dance Performance Company, which serves on the event’s planning committee, is participating by teaching attendees simple folk dances. After the family activities, a bonfire will be held outside on the ArtSpace lawn from 9-10 p.m. The bonfire will include folk music and drumming, dancing and more. ArtSpace Herndon's upcoming exhibit will feature the works of three local artists, Andrea Cybyk, Mary Ellen Mogee and M. Jane Johnson. The exhibit, Color: Bold & Vibrant, is full of abstract pieces that showcase bright hues and opens Dec. 11. Cybuk uses graphite, collage and transparent washes in her work, Mogee focuses on visual effects and geometric lines, and Johnson uses acrylics, oils and drawing to combine color and form. The opening receiption will be on Dec. 16 from 3-5 p.m. During the opening reception, The Gassmann Duo will perform live jazz music. The duo includes father and son, Mike and Dave Gassmann. ArtSpace Herndon's fourth annual Expressions Portrait Competition included 25 finalists whose work is on display at the gallery through Dec. 9. Jurors for the competition included Tricia Cherrington Ratliff and Caron Broadway Moody. Judge Kirt Schwarz announced the winners of the competition earlier this month. Prizes were awarded to the top three winners. First place was awarded to Mark Giaimo for his oil painting, "Portrait of Marlis."
