Herndon Celebrates Memorial Day with Observance at Chestnut Grove

Herndon-area residents gathered at Chestnut Grove Cemetery for a Memorial Day observance on Monday.

The American Legion Post 184, the Town of Herndon and the Herndon High School ROTC Color Guard and many area Boy Scouts spent Monday, May 28 helping local residents celebrate Memorial Day with an observance at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Though many celebrate Memorial Day weekend with pool time, cookouts and parties, it should also be a time to remember those who served our country, said Herndon Mayor Steve DeBenedittis. The event included remarks from DeBenedittis, American Legion Post 184 Commander David Kirby and Post Chaplain Dmytro Andriuk, as well as the laying of wreaths on the tomb of two unknown Confederate soldiers.

It was a beautiful ceremony. The weather great, the cemetery was beautifully decorated, the Herndon High School ROTC Color Guard did a nice job, and the Mayor made very thoughtful remarks. My thanks to the American Legion for organizing the ceremony.   more ›
