It's time for this week's roundup of the region's wackiest news.
Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening in at least one of them. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Weird Virginia/DC usually runs on Patch sites every Saturday. Everyone knows that Northern Virginia and DC traffic is notoriously bad. Add a sinkhole to the mix, and you've got problems. That's what happened in Reston this week when motorists on Lawyers Road near Steeplechase were detoured, as a 10-foot sinkhole showed itself. Fairfax Water and road crews patched the spot by the evening rush hour, and thankfully no one was injured by the giant hole in the road. We realize everybody hates traffic, but somebody out there also hates Mother's …

The Greater Herndon Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #64 hosted its annual charitable golf tournament on April 29.
Submitted to Patch by the Greater Herndon Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #64. This past Monday, the Greater Herndon Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #64 (FOP) hosted its Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament, benefitting the Cops & Kids Program and Police Unity Tour. Despite the questionable looking skies, the weather held out and everyone enjoyed a wonderful day of golf and friendship with members of our community. Together with the support of our sponsors and participants, we were able to bring in more than $19,906 to the FOP to assist in funding these programs. The team from Virginia Eagle Distributing, under the leadership of Mike Lewis, took home the trophy this year, posting an impressive score of 16 under par. The second place team…

The firefighter was treated at a local hospital and has been released.
Officials have determined what caused a fire that broke out Saturday night in Herndon, destroying a home and displacing a family of five. The single family home is located 412 Queens Row Street, near the corner of Trinity Gate Street, close to the entrance of Runnymede Park. In a statement issued Monday, firefighters said they encountered "heavy fire and smoke coming from the roof and attic of the two-story home" upon arrival. The statement said firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes - though, unfortunately, one firefighter sustained "non-life-…

Locals said they could see the smoke and commotion.

There were no injuries, but there is extensive damage to the home, the supervisor said. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and the department is investigating. More information may be available Monday, the supervisor said. Herndon Patch readers took to our Facebook page to share what they saw and try to find more information on the family. Dulles International Airport will simulate a jetliner accident - complete with victims and fire - on Saturday.
If you see smoke and helicopters in the direction of Dulles International Airport on Saturday, don't be alarmed. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is conducting an emergency preparedness exercise from 8:30 a.m. to about noon. The drill will include a simulated aircraft accident that will test the airport’s emergency plan and provide hands-on training to airport and mutual aid emergency response personnel, an airport spokesman said. The drill will take place on a closed runway and will not affect normal airport operations. But it will include the following elements to simulate the realism of an actual emergency: * A widebody United Airlines jet aircraft on the runway * A trainer aircraft that will be lit on fire, producing …

Police still asking locals to come forward with info if they have any.
Also, items stolen from several cars, and a handful of drug and shoplifting arrests.
Herndon police say a woman was caught trespassing at a home in the 700 block of Van Buren Street three times in one day. On April 19, police received the first call from the resident at noon that day. The woman came back, prompting the resident to call the police again at 5:49 p.m. However, two calls to the police apparently weren't enough to scare the 34-year-old Great Falls woman off, because she returned yet again, just before 7:45 p.m. This time, Herndon police arrested her. -------------------------------- The Herndon Police Department also reported the following incidents from April 15 to 21. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. BRUIN DISTRICT Larceny - A resident reported his/her vehicle …
