Walter Mess fit the description of an ideal OSS candidate: "a Ph.D. who can win a barRead More fight." He served as an influential member of the Board of Directors of The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Society (www.osssociety.org), a nonprofit organization the celebrates the historic accomplishments of the World War II predecessor to the C.I.A. and the U.S. Special Operations Command. He will greatly missed and never forgotten.

From the time Pat worked with us on Herndon's downtown planning in the 1980's, Pat would call meRead More every few months to talk about a planning idea he was working on at the time. He was a brilliant thinker and a man of wonderful humor. I will miss calls. - Richard Downer

Why no coverage of today's funeral in any of the local media? It's a horrible thing that happened inRead More the Peterson home, but it would be comforting to know how they were honored.

All - I'd like to focus on the incredible work done day in and day out (nights, too) by theRead More farmers who ferry their goods to the markets in Northern Virginia. They provide us with an alternative to industrial agriculture. They provide an incredible boost to our local economies. There may very well come a time when they are our only alternative to industrial agriculture - because of increasing transit costs, increasing agricultural input costs (all those fossil fuel based pesticides and fertilizers), or any number of external forces over which we in Reston have absolutely no control. So, please, support them at every turn - buy from all the farmers' markets within your reach. And, get in touch with Sustainable Reston at info@sustainablereston.org if you, like we, are passionate about local food and our local economy. We want to come up with a system that makes it easier for our farmers to get their product to us and has them logging fewer hours on the road. Shannon lost his life in a tragic accident brining food from West Virginia into the Washington Metropolitan area. Do you have any idea about the risks all our farmers run every day getting food to us? Let's work together to keep the food coming, the small, local food producers in business, and our precious farmers a little safer. Let us hear from you! We have ideas and we're betting you do, too.

I have known Margaret for over 30 years. She is to me the proverbial fairy godmother/Mother Goose;Read More always gentle and sweet, with a soft voice and impish giggle. She welcomed everyone equally, cutting flowers for the children to take home, and was willing to share all that she knew about gardening. The only time I knew her to be upset was when two Gypsy women entered her farmhouse while she was working in her iris patch as so often she was, with her trademark straw hat. They stole a number of items, among them her cherished wedding ring from her deceased husband. She was heartbroken, as was I, that anyone would take advantage of such a glorious, storybook soul. Once together, we visited a daylily hybridizer, an ancient, crusty, gruff soul whose countenance only softened when talking with Margaret. As they conferred, I strolled through his field of treasures, euphoric from the intense beauty of this mid-summer miracle. Dazed by the sensory overload, I began snapping the deadheads off the still blooming stalks as she had taught me to do in helping her with her garden. She, now finished with her conversation, quickly arrived at my side to explain that my efforts to help were not welcome; Mr. McGregor was waiting for the forthcoming seeds, having just pollinated the plants with another variety! Horrified, I burst into tears. Margaret patted my back and assured me that the world would not end. I continue to this day to admire and love this special woman.
Tammi Petrine May 31, 2011 at 02:42 pm
Margaret continued: She had been worried in these later years about what to do with her gardenRead More which she considered "our" garden and hoped that Fairfax County could buy it and set up a horticultural training facility for students who needed alternative learning opportunities. She was self-less, as she could have sold her property for a huge sum given her lifestyle and enjoyed a comfortable retirement, plus leaving a wonderful inheritance to her son. She did not. She never gave up the dream of having her garden preserved for the enjoyment and education of all. Neither should we.

Mrs. Thomas was not only a lover of irises but a sweet and kind lover of the arts as well. SheRead More reveled in the fact that artists and photographers flocked to her garden in May. She proudly showed her "iris" collection paintings, photographs and even shirts and smocks proudly. My friends and I painted there often. My favorite time was when a class of elementary age students arrived with their mom or dad, a blanket, watercolors, and sketchpad. The Impressionists would have loved her! She watched the group paint that day and just beamed. She will be sorely missed.
