This Weekend: Spooktacular, Haunted House, Boneyard Haunt, Free Children's Opera and More

Plan your weekend with these fun events taking place around Fairfax County.

Get Ready to Get Scared! Bradley Farms Haunted House is back! This haunted house regularly attracts thousands of visitors, and all proceeds benefit Herndon-Reston FISH which provides emergency assistance to families in need. Friday night and Saturday night from 6-10 p.m., get ready for no-holds-barred scary; on Saturday, there's a tamed-down version for the younger kids from 1-5 p.m. Plus, in the parking lot, there's booths with games (Herndon Patch on Saturday from 1-4 p.m.!), concessions and live musical acts. Bradley Farm, 13159 New Parkland Dr., Herndon.

Halloween Magic: Children ages 3-8 are invited to the Herndon Community Center this Friday for the annual Spooktacular, a not-too-scary event featuring ghoulish games, spooky crafts and a magic show. Children are encouraged to wear their best costume, and each child will receive a special Halloween treat bag. Parents must accompany children. $8 in advance or $11 the day before and at the door. Sign up by going here and searching "Spooktacular." This Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave.


A Little Taste of Opera for the Kids: It's never too early (or too late) to expose the young ones to opera—particularly when it's in the form of one of their favorite fairy tales! Come to Fairfax City for the Virginia Opera's operatic version of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, based on scenes from the operettas of Sir Arthur Sullivan. This classic tale exposes children to the opera art form while emphasizing respect and consideration for others. Free. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2 p.m. Stacy Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Hwy., Fairfax.

Boneyard Hunt. Bring out your costumed pup for a special event for dogs. Lake Accotink Park will host a Howloween Dog Costume Contest and Boneyard Hunt. Special prizes and treats will be available. All dogs must be leashed and friendly. $6 per dog. 2-4 p.m. Saturday. Lake Accotink Park, 7500 Lake Accotink Park Road, Springfield.

Boo! More Parks! Fairfax County Parks Authority has several other Halloween events this weekend. Pumpkin Patch at Nature Playce, Halloween Fest at Green Spring Gardens, Historic All Hallows Eve at Sully Historic SIte, Halloween Goblin Golf at Lake Accotink, the Ghost Train at Burke Lake and more. Costs, times and locations vary.


Old School Halloween Party. Busy weekend at Jammin’ Java with a lot of  shows planned, but we’ll keep with the Halloween theme and highlight the “All Souls Day” Old School Halloween Party presented by SNRG. Scream … Surprise! Some of Disney’s most popular characters hit the ice at the Patriot Center all weekend for Disney on Ice: Let’s Celebrate. There will be performances of holiday themes, including a Halloween Haunt by the Disney villains, along with a birthday party with the Mad Hatter and more. From $20. Times vary. Thru Sunday. Patriot Center, 4400 University Drive, Fairfax.


Back So Soon? Yes. Summer camp returns as an extra Halloween treat. The Workhouse Arts Center hosts aHalloween Mini Camp this weekend, with costume and cooking lessons, and more. For ages 6-10. $145. Register. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton.


Barns Bursting. Busy weekend at the Wolf Trap with folk, country and bluegrass concerts. Sam Bush, the “king of Newgrass,” kicks off the weekend’s events Thursday. Memphis-born Jesse WInchester performs Friday. And folk duo Magpie presents a 40th Anniversary show on Saturday. Costs and times vary. The Barns at Wolf Trap, 1635 Trap Road, Vienna.
