After Studio Destroyed in Fire, Herndon Artist Back in the Game This Weekend

Ken Hinkel will display his abstract multimedia art in the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival at the Dulles Expo Center Friday through Sunday.

Herndon artist Ken Hinkel is among hundreds of select artists participating in this weekend's Sugarloaf Crafts Festival at the Dulles Expo Center.

For Hinkel, this weekend is exciting, not just because this is his first time participating in this large and prestigious show, but also because he is only just starting to participate in art shows again after his home studio was destroyed in a fire a short time ago.

"I'm slowly starting to get back out there," Hinkel told Patch recently.

Hinkel said he has worked in many different media in the past, such as stained glass, impressionistic landscapes, murals in different locations and more.

"I've spent a long time exploring different pathways," he said.

The medium he works in most often currently, he describes as abstract multimedia.

"I use paper, canvas, watercolor, acrylic paint and inks to make layered structures, such as different shaped layers of paper on canvas," Hinkel explained.

The photos above are of a few pieces of Hinkel's art, which he will be displaying and selling at his booth at the Sugarloaf festival this weekend.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival features more than 300 jury-selected artisans showing and selling their handcrafted work.

Spokesperson Caroline Duane said, "This is a great event for holiday shopping and family fun."

Duane said the many booths will feature one-of-a-kind holiday gifts including functional and decorative pottery, sculpture, glass, jewelry, fashion, leather, wood, metal, furniture, home accessories, photography and fine art for sale.

In addition to shopping for unique holiday gifts and items for holiday entertaining, visitors can sample and purchase gourmet foods, watch demonstrations from master craftspeople, enjoy live music, and participate in interactive children’s entertainment, Duane said.
