See what's happening this week in Herndon and nearby.

Muggers, Beware! Gain confidence from knowing how to defend yourself, should you ever be faced with physical danger or attack. On Monday night, First Defense will kick off a four-week class on the foundations of Krav Maga, such as how to release yourself from chokeholds or bear hugs, defensive striking, and more. Classes are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7-8 p.m. The cost is $249 for four weeks. Upcoming sessions begin this week on Monday, Jan. 6, and next month on Feb. 3. Classes take place at First Defense, 291 Sunset Park Dr. in Herndon. Enroll here.

Learn How to Save a LifeYou never know when it could come in handy—the life-saving skills of CPR/AED. Learn how to perform this vital technique, and become CPR/AED-certified. This class is tailored toward nonmedical professionals in the working community, such as teachers, child care workers, parents, bus drivers and the like. The class has two portions—an online portion, and an in-person skills practice session. Cost is $60-70. This Saturday, Jan. 11, 9 a.m. Blue Ridge Speech and Hearing, 19465 Deerfield Ave., Suite 201, Leesburg. Click here for more information and to register.

Make Room for Your New Christmas GadgetsClear out the old, unwanted electronic clutter, and make room for all the sweet new stuff you got over the holidays. Four Seasons and the Herndon Environmental Network are sponsoring an electronics recycling event this Saturday, Jan. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Just drive up, and volunteers will unload your car for you! HEN members pledge that all items will be reused if possible, and if not, they will be disassembled and the component materials recycled. Nothing will be sent to a landfill, and all items will be disassembled here in Virginia, rather than being sent overseas, they said. Recycling will be provided by Forever Green out of Chantilly. Click here for detailed lists of what items will be accepted.

Toe-Tappin' FunCelebrate the weekend with some good music—this month's edition of the Weekend Bluegrass Concert Series brings you the tunes of Danny Paisley and The Southern Grass, who has won critical acclaim from many in the industry. This Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1090 Sterling Road in Herndon. Admission is $15, or free for children 12 and under. Light snacks provided.
