This Week: Ceremonial Flag Retirement, Holiday Model Train Show, Storybook Brunch and More

Ceremonial Flag Retirement. American Legion Post 184 and Boy Scout Troop 1570 of Herndon invite all to attend a ceremonial retirement of American flags as an Eagle Project. The ceremony will be conducted by Boy Scout Eagle Scout Candidate Roger W. Lambert II. Uniformed officials, active duty military and Boy or Girl Scouts of America should please come in their Class A uniform. Flags have already been collected but feel free to bring any other flags to be retired. Anyone is invited to attend. Monday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Herndon Maintenance Yard, 1479 Sterling Road. An Evening in December
Put aside the holiday to-do list and take a night to slow down and enjoy the company of other women at Floris United Methodist Church, 13600 Frying Pan Road, Herndon. Fellowship and live music will be offered, and proceeds will benefit Helping Children Worldwide, which supports the Child Rescue Centre and Mercy Hospital in Sierra Leone, West Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. The Future of Fairfax County Schools. 
The League of Women Voters invites all to a discussion of the future of Fairfax County Public Schools. This Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Reston Art Gallery, 11400 Washington Plaza West, Lake Anne in Reston, and again on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 1624 Sourwood Lane in Reston. For more information, call Lucy at 703-757-5893.


Holiday Model Train Show. 
See model trains, and the W&OD caboose and Herndon Depot Museum will also be open for tours. Saturday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Herndon Municipal Center, 777 Lynn St. 703-437-5556.


A Storybook Holiday BrunchHoliday fun includes a visit with Santa, crafts, brunch, and a reading of a holiday story by a special guest. $14 per adult/child pair. Saturday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m. to noon. Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Ave.


Children's Holiday Workshop. The merchants of Worldgate Centre are hosting a free Children’s Holiday Workshop event. The event includes photos with Santa, holiday craft making, holiday characters, balloon artists, holiday musical entertainment and temporary tattoos. All activities are free. Craft project supplies are limited. Parents are welcome to bring their own cameras. This Saturday, Dec. 14, 2-5 p.m. at Worldgate Centre, 13025 Worldgate Dr. at Elden Street, Herndon.

New Year's Eve Golf Tournament. 
Annual four-person scramble. Entry fee includes green fee, cart fee, range balls, prizes and lunch. $70. Entry deadline Dec. 21. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. Herndon Centennial Golf Course, 909 Ferndale Ave.
