is holding its 8th annual Charity Dog Wash this weekend at many of its locations, including Hendon.
Dogtopia is aiming to raise $25,000 at its locations nationwide to give back to military service dogs, police dogs and therapy dogs.
The first dog wash fundraiser was held in July 2005 at Dogtopia’s original location in Vienna. The goal was to garner support for military dogs and their handlers serving overseas.
The event attracted a lot of attention and raised $9,000. Dogtopia was able to ship about 5,000 pounds of supplies to them, including cooling pads, protective eyewear and clothing, and treats and toys.
After the first event Dogtopia founded a charitable arm for the company, K-9 Support, Inc. The organization supports working dogs and service dogs of all kinds. Nationwide, Dogtopia locations have raised more than $80,000 for dogs.
“It’s more important than ever to give back to local working dogs in our communities, since funding is being cut in the government,” said Amy Nichols, CEO and Founder of Dogtopia in a press release. “I am excited to see how much the event has grown every year and that we’re truly making a difference for these canines.”
The local charity dog wash taking place at Dogtopia of Herndon will be held Sunday from 12-4 p.m. The goal is to wash at least 100 dogs.
Dog owners can bring their dogs in for a bath and enjoy food and fun after. Local businesses have committed to the annual dog wash through donations and representation, including , Opportunity Barks, and Homeward Trails.
Dogtopia is requesting a $15 donation per dog washed. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to K-9 Support. For more information on Dogtopia’s Charity Dog Wash, visit www.k9support.org.
