Girl Scout Cadettes Earn Silver Award

Local Cadettes develop tutoring service for kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

Herndon Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1372 developed a tutoring service for Herndon called Rocket Learning.

After spending weeks deciding on a community project that would be beneficial to Herndon, the troop provided service hours for the tutoring service and would, in turn, earn the Silver Award.

Rocket Learning was created to help children in their learning process with the assistance of tutors. The Cadettes tutored for two hours on Monday evenings for a year and a half, including through the summer months. Most of the children who participated in tutoring have parents in the English for Speakers of Other Languages class at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

The children who received tutoring were in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, and focused on math and English, as well as their homework. Tutors tried a variety of techniques to see which worked best for each student, ranging from educational games to worksheets.

said it appreciated the Cadettes’ service because it provided an extension to the ESOL program, as well as role models for the students.
