Happy Birthday, Girl Scouts!

This month is the anniversary  of the founding of the Girls Scouts on March 12, 1912, by Juliette Gordon Low, and the public is invited to view a display at the Herndon Fortnightly Library celebrating the 100th anniversary of our organization.

The month-long exhibit, which is free to view, includes dolls wearing Girl Scout uniforms from across the globe, as well as other Girl Scout books and memorabilia. The library is located at 768 Center St.; click here for hours.

Local Girl Scouts also will be participating in upcoming events in the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital. The events include an Interfaith Service at the National Cathedral on April 28 and the Girl Scouts Rock the Mall singalong event on June 9.

Our local communities also have been busy celebrating the historic birthday since the start of the year:

At a Feb. 28 meeting, the Herndon Town Council kicked off its session with a proclamation honoring and congratulating the Girl Scouts on its 100th anniversary. Junior Troop 6982 of Service Unit 51-9 conducted a flag ceremony, and Vice Mayor Lisa Merkel announced the proclamation.

Councilman William B. Tirrell followed the proclamation with his own words of appreciation. “Girl Scouts within the town and outside the town do in fact take part in the town. If you ever have the opportunity to go to Trailside Park, take a look at the sign. Service Unit 51-11 has made (cleaning) that park one of the things they do. So I thank the Girl Scouts for the effort on our behalf in all the things they do. Some are little, some are big, but I thank them for all of them.”

On March 11, the public was invited to celebrate with local Girl Scouts at an open house at ArtSpace in downtown Herndon. Guests perused a historical exhibit of Sandy Alexander's Girl Scout uniforms, dolls and books while enjoying delicious cupcakes in Girl Scout Cookie flavors donated by Michelle Proulx.
