On Saturday, April 30 Clearview Elementary held its first 5K and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk to raise money for the school's heart rate monitor fund so that all 4th through 6th grade students can where heart rate monitors in gym class.
The monitors individualize each students intensity level, so each student is excersising safely based on their own heart rate. The idea is that monitors prevent students from going passed the heart rate targets.
Laura Janelle, a gym teacher at Clearview Elementary and the organizor of the run, said this was not just a school event, but a community event. She said she could not have done it without the PTA and volunteer Amy Platt. During the event the Fairfax County Police and the Dunn Loring Fire Station donated some of their time and Reston T-Shirt donated shirts for every participant.
There were 208 participants, 54 of which signed up to take part on the day of the race. The first runner did the mile in under 7 minutes. Kids, parents and teachers had a blast at an event where everyone got to feel like a winner.
