Herndon Lacrosse Beats Centreville 14-4

Hornets snap Centreville's five game winning streak

The Herndon Hornets snapped Centreville High School’s five game winning streak with a 14-4 victory on a rainy night in Herndon on Thursday.

The Hornets stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter, during which John Falucia scored two goals.

Senior midfielder Brad Mank did a great job throughout the game of winning face offs and getting his teammates into position for scoring opportunities.

“We got a lot of possessions throughout the game, it helps when you can start off with the ball,” Mank said after the victory. He finished the night with three goals scored.

Centreville was no match for the speed, experience and depth of Herndon’s overall team effort. The Hornets had possession of the ball for the majority of the game and were good at getting sticks on Centreville players when they had the ball in their territory.  The Wildcats became frustrated from the flurry of scores, as Herndon continually scored in bunches throughout the game.

“They did a better job than we’ve done in recent games with on ball defense and they did a little better job with playing team defense,” Herndon head coach David Bagetta said after the game. “There was some good ball movement and we just did a great job overall as a team getting everyone involved.”

As the rain began to drizzle down in the beginning of the second half, the Wildcats turned up their defensive intensity, but it still wasn’t enough to contain the Hornets.  After sophomore Tyler Vennergrund scored an early goal for the Wildcats, Herndon went on to score six goals in the third quarter to take a 12-2 lead and put the game out of reach.

“We’re still a work in progress, the one thing we try to stress to the team is to make sure that they get better on a day to day basis,” Bagetta said. “Centreville was undefeated coming into this game, so putting together a good team effort against them definitely helps our guys grow.”

The Hornets improve to 3-2 with the victory and will face South County High School Monday night.
