Herndon Hornets Wrestling Team Has Winning Weekend

Team won the Raider Duals competition over the weekend.

The Herndon High School wrestling team made its first road trip of the 2013-14 season a successful one as the Hornets posted a 5-0 record and won the Raider Duals at Stonewall Jackson High School this past weekend.

The Hornets opened the day with a win over Liberty 42-22, then beat Potomac 40-36, before closing out pool play with a 69-9 thumping of Freedom (South Riding).

In the semi-finals, Herndon continued their winning ways, defeating Freedom (Woodbridge) 57-12, before ending the day with a win over West Potomac 52-24 in the finals.

Five Hornets posted perfect records on the day: sophomores Erick Emelio (132lbs.) and Sam Milligan (138lbs.), and seniors Joey Reilly (145lbs.), Sean Pike (160lbs.), and Bassam Estwani (170lbs.) went undefeated for the day.

Other standout performances were turned in by sophomores H.T. Elston (4-1 at 120lbs.), Marshall Kurtz (2-1 at 132lbs.), and juniors Jake Smith (4-1 at 195lbs.) and Arbaz Hussein (4-1 at 220lbs.).

“We’ve been training hard the last few weeks,” said Herndon head coach Mike Gonzales. “It’s nice to finally pull through and win a tournament to start the year. Our team has put in a lot of work, and now we’re getting some ‘W’s’ to show for it.”

The Hornets are scheduled to return to the mats this Wednesday, Dec. 11 when they visit South Lakes. The match will feature both junior varsity and varsity teams going head-to-head against crosstown rivals the Seahawks.
