Football: Herndon High, South Lakes Battle in Baron Cameron Bowl Friday

Will the Hornets win the crosstown trophy back from the Seahawks this year?

By Karen Goff

Herndon and South Lakes high schools meet Friday in the "Baron Cameron Bowl" - the annual interconference battle for neighborhood bragging rights.

The schools play in different conferences - South Lakes, former Liberty now VHSL Conference 6; Herndon, former Concorde, now Conference 5 - but many of the players grew up playing youth sports together, and, of course, a good portion of Herndon High students live in Reston.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at South Lakes.

Herndon has the historical advantage, but South Lakes is the current holder of the Baron Cameron Bowl trophy. The Seahawks defeated the Hornets 21-7 at Herndon in 2012.

That victory was only the Seahawks' second win over the Hornets since 2002.

South Lakes is 1-1. After a season-opening 45-7 loss to Westfield at home, the Seahawks defeated Washington-Lee 14-8 on the road last week.

Herndon is 0-2. The Hornets lost close games to Mount Vernon 19-17 and West Springfield 23-21 to start the season.
