The South Lakes High School girls soccer team held top-ranked Stone Bridge to a 1-1 tie Tuesday.

Steady defensive play by the back line of Gabby Alcantara, Lindsey Gibson, and Kaitlyn Gallagher frustrated and stifled the Bulldogs offense all night and All-District Goal Keeper Sara Vigen turned in one of the best performances of her high school career.

Girls Lacrosse: Hornets Top Seahawks

The Herndon High Schools girls lacrosse team held on for a thrilling 13-12 victory over South Lakes Tuesday at Herndon High.

The game matched up former teammates from the Herndon-Reston Youth Lacrosse League (HRYL) and current club teammates. A large crowd of folks were on hand to cheer on the two teams.

Herndon got off to a quick start, taking a 4-0 lead on goals by Alexis Duke, freshman Leanne Janowski, Katherine Wilson, and Katherine Dougherty.

South Lakes' Seniors Kenzie Hughes and Sadie Belt scored to close the gap to 4-2. Herndon's Rachel Delmontagne and Wilson scored and South Lakes' Freshman Kristina Woodward scored at the buzzer to make the score 6-3 in favor of Herndon at halftime.

To start the second half, Hughes tallied her second goal for South Lakes, followed by two goals from Herndon's Michele Hutchette to give the Hornets a 8-4 leads.

The Hornets controlled the draws throughout the game making it difficult for the Seahawks to gain possession of the ball. But the Seahawks defense then began to step up their game. Senior goalie Emily Lipscomb made numerous acrobatic saves for South Lakes and the defensive unit of Nicole and Kenna Salvatore, Lindsey Rook, Leah Duffy, Caitlyn Maginnes, and Josie Wnek played hard, making steal, allowing the Seahawks to mount a comeback.

Midfielders Sarah Hawes and Ebony Mitchell-Goodfellow made numerous nice plays in the midfield. Woodward scored her second goal of the game, followed by Hughes' third for a hat trick. The Curran sisters, Maureen and Kerry, scored for Herndon with Woodward's hat-trick goal sandwiched in between to give Herndon a 10-7 lead. Hutchette and Maureen Curran scored for Herndon to push the lead out to 13-7.

Then, with 10 minutes left in the game, the Seahawks mounted a comeback. South Lakes speedy midfielders Katie Thomas and freshman Emma Rygiel flew up and down the field recovering ground balls. Belt scored her second of the game, followed by Woodward's fourth.

Sophomore Gabrielle Parisi and senior Maria Leith scored for South Lakes to cut the score to 13-11 Herndon.

Sophomore Megan Greatorex scored with 18 second left to leave the Seahawks down by just one goal. On the ensuing draw, the Seahawks managed one of their few draw controls of the game, and Sadie Belt attacked the goal and drew a penalty shot with one second left. On the last play of the game, Herndon freshman goal Jessica Corum made a sensational save on Belt's shot to secure the hard fought victory for Herndon.

The Seahawks are home to face Fairfax on Friday, while the Hornets' next game is an April 16 home game against Westfield.
