Pride of Herndon Marching Band Coming Home 'Grand Champions'

The band was given a big honor during the Pearl Harbor Day Parade in Hawaii on Saturday.

Though the snow and ice has thrown a bit of a wrench in their flights home, members of Herndon High School's Pride of Herndon marching band are coming home champions—or rather, Grand Champions.

The Pride of Herndon was awarded Grand Champion honors for their performance in the Pearl Harbor Day Parade in Hawaii this past Saturday, Dec. 7.

Mayor Lisa Merkel said the town couldn't be more proud of all the hard-working, talented band members and their staff and chaperones.

"We are so proud of the Herndon Hornets marching band," Merkel said Sunday. "Winning the Grand Champion award is quite an honor! These kids have worked so hard—and it is well deserved."

"Wishing them safe travels as they return to the ice and snow from Honolulu," she added.

"I am bursting with pride this morning. What an amazing journey they had. And they did it all with class. Safe travels today as you begin your trip home," said Town Councilmember Melissa Jonas.

The band members and their staff and chaperones are hopefully all arriving back into Dulles Monday morning, after many of their flights from California via Hawaii were canceled due to weather Sunday.
