Two Herndon area schools took two of the top three spots at this year’s Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS competition, held Feb. 2.
Nysmith School was awarded second place and Rachel Carson Middle School received third place. Both schools are in the Fairfax Chapter of MATHCOUNTS, which had 26 schools competing.
This year’s competition was so large it was held at two locations, including Lake Braddock Secondary School and the US Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria.
Nysmith’s team is coached by JoMarie Broccoli and includes students Akshaj Kadaveru, Shaan Bhandarkar, Aaditya Singh and Shwtark Patel.
Carson Middle School’s team is coached by Angie Cahill and includes students Lillian Wang, Ju Yeon Lee, Lawrence Wang and David Liu.
More than 450 students in grades six through eight competed at this year’s regional event. The students compete as teams and as individual. Two of the four top scoring students included two Nysmith students, Akshaj Kadaveru, who took second place, and Shaan Bhandarkar, who took fourth place.
Students began practicing in the fall. Rocky Run Middle School took first place in the Fairfax Chapter.
The winning team, as well as the top two individuals not on the winning team from each chapter, will have the opportunity to compete at the Virginia state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 16 at Dominion Power in Glen Allen.
